Santiago de Chile: Metropolitan Cathedral

City: Santiago de Chile
Place: Metropolitan Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile is one of the largest catholic cathedrals in the Americas. Its length can be easily seen from the huge doors of the Plaza de Armas entrance. Like most of the cathedrals of the continent, it’s the result of the union of many buildings that were built in different historical periods. The complex is composed by the main building with the two epic frontal towers, the Parroquia del Sagrario, and the Palacio Arzobispal.

Santiago de Chile: Mapocho Station & Central Market

City: Santiago de Chile
Place: Mapocho Station & Central Market

Located on the exact opposite side of the Financial District, the Mapocho Railway Station and the Central Market are the two main points of the border between the tourist area and the rest of the city. The Central Market, strongly influenced by the italian architecture (as many of this kind of markets of South America around the same era) has handicraft shops, general supply and restaurants. Just a few blocks away lies the Mapocho Railway Station, a Beaux Arts beauty who was turned at the end of the 1990s into a cultural center.

Santiago de Chile: Cerro Santa Lucía

City: Santiago de Chile
Place: Cerro Santa Lucía

On a smaller scale, the Cerro Santa Lucía functions just like the Cerro San Cristóbal, that means a large air purifier and a meeting point for the people of Santiago de Chile. However, this particular hill hides an interesting “castle” on the top, the Castillo Hidalgo, who was built as a defense point at the beginning of the 19th Century. Several decades later, the famous major of the city, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, turned this hill into a large park with a strong Beaux Arts influence.

Santiago de Chile: Metro

City: Santiago de Chile
Place: Metro

With more than 100km. long and more than 100 stations, the Metro of Santiago Chile is one of the largest and most modern subway networks in Latin America. It covers a huge part of the urban sprawl of Santiago, where most of the population is located. It is famous for its Alstom trains, whom by the way uses tires, which is somehow rare on the region. This networks is used by almost 2.500.000 people everyday, a number who will grow up a lot when the new Lines 3 and 6 are finished, just a few years ahead.

Santiago de Chile: Big Public Palaces

City: Santiago de Chile
Place: Big Public Palaces

The current splendor of the biggest capitals of Latin America started in the times of the waves of the european and asian immigration. Though most of them was born during the conquest of the Spanish Empire, their exponential growth took place in the last 150 years. In the specific case of Santiago de Chile, there’s some exquisite examples: the most important is the Palacio de la Moneda, originally made for as the house of the production of coins, who then was turned into the Presidential Palace. Another gorgeous example is the Palace of Justice, made with characteristics of neoclassical architecture, a style often used for the Justice in the whole world. A few blocks away, just in front of the Plaza de Armas, is also the Museum of National History, former Palace of the Real Audiencia, where some essential events of the Independence of Chile took place. Lastly, two smaller examples: the Post Office with its Beaux Arts style (somehow similar to the gigantic building of the Post Office of Buenos Aires), and the outstanding Cuartel General de Bomberos with its unique neo-baroque style, who almost looks on its details like an hungarian palace.

yes i have been to argentina and uruguay and certainly chile feels very different. i loved it. we went to santiago, cajon del maipo in the andes, isla de pascua, valpo y isla negra (all 3 casas de pablo neruda). so i will make photo threads when i can. the people were always very nice and helpful. i would love to go back and visit patagonia & atacama sometime. there is so much to see and do in chile. i read an article in the santiago newspaper that said tourism is booming this year.

of course i need to go back to argentina soon too. i have only been to BsAs and there is so much more to do there as well.
