I'm a sucker for both brick and sharp corner buildings. This looks great.

I like it - especially if the black accents that frame the windows are real rather than somebody taking liberties with the renderings. Those kinds of little details make a big difference in my opinion. I'm also a sucker for a nicely defined roofline, which this has. And I especially love that rounded corner. Thumbs up!

The Painting has begun! Sorry for the poor image, I was stopped very briefly in traffic. The whole facade looks like a paint by number, with lines drawn in pencil and colors called out with letters and numbers.

Ok. I've been hard on the dumbbell in the past because IMO its a design probably lifted from downtown Bikini Bottom (too many Sponge Bob Squarepants episodes)...

However, with the gloomy, oppressive architecture of Yard, 419, and G/E's upcoming fugly mass on the Fishel's site...at least this project is adding quite a bit of visual interest to the area. Fair Haired Dumbbell is preventing Lower Burnside from becoming Pearl 2.0. Thank you, Cavenaugh, thank you.

Indeed. I love the fact that people will either love this or hate it, but it won't be ignored (Portland Building 2.0?). A whimsical, dare I say Gaudi-esque splash of shape and color!

Since this is going to be 9 floors instead of the usual 6, I wonder what type of construction this will be.

Photos: Jupiter rising on East Burnside

A six-story hotel under construction on East Burnside Street will serve as an expansion of the Jupiter Hotel, a motor inn located one block west across Southeast Ninth Avenue. Yorke & Curtis is building the 67-room hotel, which was designed by Works Progress Architecture.

The building’s ground floor will contain a restaurant, lobby and programming space, the second floor will feature a lounge, meeting room, banquet hall, and outdoor garden space, and the guest rooms will be on floors three through six. The structure has two floors of post-tensioned concrete on a slab-on-grade foundation, and floors three and above will be wood-framed.

The building will be mostly clad in asphalt shingle panels manufactured by Portland-based Malarkey Roofing Products. Construction on the project began late last year, and is slated for completion at the end of this year.
...continues at the DJC (no paywall).

I like the Dumbell, I'm surprised to say. It adds a nice splash of color and whimsy to the area, and sorry to beat the same drum again but it's a nice contrast to the Yard as well. Feels very European to me.

I like it --agree about the color-- but it's definitely not the graphic that I would have chosen. Maybe I'm just getting old. I'll be sure to swing by next time I've dropped a bunch of acid, though.
