It's a shame they didn't use this as an opportunity to renovate the Maple Leaf Lounge. It's now one of their most outdated MLLs out there.

Does anybody know if/when they intend to start work on extending the new terminal design to the older part of the air-side terminal?

It would be nice if there was a outdoor viewing area on the flat roof of the second level, accessible from the observation deck on the 3/F. They have several of these at Tokyo Narita airport:

This is where you watched the planes at YHZ Halifax back in the '60s. A garden/patio area where there was only a 3’ high fence separating you from the ramp and the whine of a Viscount’s Rolls-Royce Dart Turboprops or the smell of the kerosene from those new DC-9s! You could also go through a 10 cent turnstile and climb the stairs up to an open Observation Deck.

Control Tower in the early ‘60s. Same angle but closer in…and oh how that façade has changed!

So, I presume it is the same tower? Hopefully HIAA has upgraded it from vacuum tube technology. I wonder if they have addressed the many other airport-related issues identified in the TSB report on the 2015 Air Canada "hard landing" that, but for the grace of God, could have taken the lives of 138 souls?

That's not the current ATC tower, a new one was constructed many years ago and is located near the north-end of runway 14/32.

Thomas Cook Group just went belly up......

Condor is a part of Thomas Cook Group. They are still operating, but applied to the German Government for some much needed cash. Let's see what happens.

Condor's operations in Canada include service to YXY, YVR, YYC, YHZ and YYZ.

The list of non-stop European destinations from Halifax this summer continues to grow:

London Heathrow - Air Canada
London Gatwick - Westjet
Manchester - Westjet (to be announced soon)
Glasgow - Westjet
Dublin - Westjet
Paris - Westjet
Frankfurt - Condor
Munich - Condor

Reykjavik - Icelandair*
This route may return when the 737 Max 8 gets the green light to return to service. Although they will be up against some major competition for transatlantic passengers out of YHZ.

Nova Scotia to Welcome Direct Flights from China in 2020

Premier's Office
December 5, 2019 - 10:31 AM
Adding air connections between Nova Scotia and international destinations is an important way of growing tourism, as well as other sectors of the economy. Early in the fall of 2020 Nova Scotia will welcome visitors from China on two direct charter flights.

China Southern Airlines will fly from the city of Guangzhou to Halifax, bringing hundreds of tourists who will tour Nova Scotia, along with New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

“This is a milestone in our relationship with China. Our partnerships with our sister province of Guangdong and Governor MA Xingrui, China Southern Airlines and GZL International Travel Service were critical to this initiative,” said Premier Stephen McNeil. “These flights are the first step in securing regular air access from Guangdong and other regions of China to Nova Scotia and the rest of our region. We look forward to welcoming even more Chinese visitors, students and business leaders as we continue to facilitate exchanges in tourism, education and culture.”

Tourism is a pillar of Nova Scotia’s economy, creating economic benefits for communities across the province. The province has a goal of attracting 50,000 Chinese visitors annually by 2024.

Good news, but if this is a direct non stop flight, they had better hand out DVT prophylaxis to all passengers, or make the wearing of compression stockings mandatory on this route. Either this, or boost funding to the ER at the Infirmary to deal with all the pulmonary emboli.........

This will be a large wide body aircraft with plenty of aisles to walk around.

The most interesting part of this will be the likely polar route this flight will take:

Guangzhou to New York (closest I could find in a hurry with non-stop flights) was about 15.5 hours. The longest flight I've been on is 12.5, and that wasn't too bad.

I've always been fascinated by the fact that the quickest way to Australia from the Maritimes is directly over the North Pole.
