The two Spirit vessels will be off to Poland (45 days via Panama Canal) for mid-life refits starting in the fall of 2017. Apparently both Victoria and Vancouver shipyards to too busy to handle the work..which is good I guess. I do know that Seaspan Victoria has 4 large cruise ships (Princess) coming in during 2017 for major work - plus the federal shipbuilding contracts.

The ferry refits will cost $140 million and involve major upgrades to navigational and propulsion systems (dual fuel diesel/LNG) as well as upgraded passenger areas with a new designs, new washrooms and expanded gift shops and cafeterias.

Probably means we need more dry docks on the west coast. Unlikely given the financial investment.

BC used to have a huge shipbuilding industry. Just because of all of the water and resources that we have in the Province...Then the 80's happened were the industry couldn't stay competitive with lower cost countries like Korea and things like the logging industry and fisheries going bust.

Well, luckily Point Hope Maritime is adding a graving dock, hopefully within under a decade.

I do have a question though, the graving dock that Seaspan Victoria uses, are they leasing it from the federal government?

Yes, the Esquimalt Graving Dock is owned, operated and maintained by PWGSC (Public Works Canada). Seaspan pays to use the cranes too.

Well thats annoying.

I wonder how they get away with asking for money from the Feds for a shipyard refit/rebuild if half their work is done in a federal graving dock.

Well since Seaspan leases the graving dock, they have no time for the bullshit moves that Irving regularly pulls on the RCN out in Halifax. Every minute extra a ship is in the drydock costs Seaspan money so it is incumbent on them to get the job done efficiently and right the first time. They have a very good reputation in the maritime refit world of excellent work and good value for money.

The new Salish Orca went through the Panama Canal Sunday on its way to Victoria from Gdansk, Poland. It will serve the Comox - Powell River run.

Interesting addition to the fleet....

http://www.bcferries.com/about/proje...lla-coola.html

Anyone know where this ship is coming from. It says it was built in 2000 but it is a new member in the BC Ferries fleet.

Hope they do a good job at refurbishing that ship. From the various youtube videos it is had a rough life. BC Ferries is a much more safety - customer experience focused organisation that the old operators https://youtu.be/rvtSD7qWeQc

Island Ferry singled out for possible Nanaimo-Vancouver service - See more at: http://www.timescolonist.com/busines....yi2PIXsn.dpuf

Quote:
Lease negotiations, including details of infrastructure at the port, and due diligence could be done in tandem, he said.

Island Ferry has two 42-metre-long catamarans under construction in Asia, Marshall said. He would not be more specific about their location. They should be ready for sea trials in April or early May.

Each would be able to carry 376 passengers, have an operating speed of 37 to 38 knots, and do the Nanaimo-Vancouver trip in 68 minutes, he said.
