Blue Jays not for sale, says Rogers CFO Anthony Staffieri

Major league team’s executives believe stock price doesn't reflect club's value

Executives at Rogers Communications say there's no plan to sell the Toronto Blue Jays.

Questions about the company's plans for Canada's only major league baseball team resurfaced late last year but Rogers executives have consistently said they want to maintain ties with the Jays.

The future of the Jays was raised on the Rogers fourth-quarter conference call.

Chief financial officer Anthony Staffieri said there are no plans to sell the Jays and Rogers management has been consistent on this point.

However, as he has said on previous occasions, Staffieri said that Rogers management would like to find a way for the value of the Blue Jays team to be reflected in the parent company's stock price.

Staffieri says he wouldn't say much more on the topic because anything that Rogers management says would fuel more speculation.

Talk about a possible sale of the Blue Jays, which surfaces from time to time, kicked into high gear last month after Staffieri made similar comments at an investor conference.

In December, American business magazine Forbes reported the team has annual revenues of $278 million US ($358 million Cdn). It values the franchise at $1.3 billion US ($1.68 billion Cdn).

Also the Montreal games have been announced.

Guerrero opted for Angels for his HoF team over the Expos. IIRC the other two inducted HoF members for the Expos also chose other teams and were basically told they would wear Expos caps in the Hall.

There was three before Guerrero - Carter, Raines and Dawson.

I'm not sure Raines asked to go in as anything other then an Expo. I know Carter wanted to go in as a Met and I believe Dawson wanted to go in as a Cub. I'm glad Major League Baseball made them go in as Expos as their best years were easily with the Expos, Carter's World Series win and Dawson's MVP Award notwithstanding. All one has to do is look at their stats to see where the majority of their personal success was achieved.

Similarly, Guerrero had his best seasons with the Expos...even better than his 2004 season with the Angels when he won the MVP award.

Would have liked to see him go in as an Expo. Oh well.

Watching Vlad Jr. hit a walkoff in Montreal for the last game of spring training was amazing. Hoping it's not the highlight of the Jay' season....

^That kid is MLB-ready right now. A rare teenager who's able to compete (and excel) at the major league level. The eye test tells you everything you need to know.

Many have compared him to Manny Ramirez. Manny was a superstar by 23. Jr might be a year or two ahead of him.

It looks like they'll give him another year - perhaps call him up in September.

Side by side comparison.

His dad always turned his hips quick, but Jr.'s swing might be even more violent. He absolutely smashes home runs.

Very Americana.

I guess Halladay's number is being retired. I can't help but feel sorry for Delgado. Halladay is arguably the Jays best pitcher ever so he's deserving of the posthumous accolade. Delgado holds almost every offensive stats for the Blue Jays. The HofF shunned him a couple years ago. Are the Jays going to do he same?

Canada's a fine country and I respect people who serve in the military.

I just don't understand what those things have to do with baseball or any sport for that matter.

From TSN:

M's James Paxton first Canadian ever to toss no-hitter in Canada

Heard his name a couple of times over the past few weeks. Another one of them BC baseball boys. Gets to play for the closest team and now throws a no-hitter in his country.

However, the no-no is not the coolest thing he's done this year. He survived an eagle attack on the field and pretended that giant bird wasn't digging its talons into his back.

He also struck out 16 in his last start.

And today he threw his hardest pitches of this no-no at the very end like as if he has some kind of robo arm.

Quote:
He was still touching three digits on the radar gun in the 9th inning, too, with his last three pitches registering at 98 mph, 100 mph and 99 mph.

I was disappointed at first when I tuned into the game to see the Jays were down 5-0, but not surprised considering how poorly Stroman has been pitching this season.
However, come the 8th inning and the no-hitter was still on, I was actually hoping the Jays didn't break it up. I thought Donaldson might have gotten a hit at the bottom of the 9th, but that was a great fielding play to complete the no-hitter.
Congratulations to Paxton and the Mariners.

The Jays have regressed closer to where they should be expected to finish. I honestly didn't even expect them to be this competitive this year, so it's been nice to enjoy the several pleasant surprises in Solarte, Hernandez, Maile, and Gurriel.

Even better is Vlad Jr. is the Jays first ever #1 prospect. Putting together one of the best AA seasons ever and he's 19. I'm kind of hoping the Jays aren't in wildcard contention at the deadline and can move Donaldson for a top pitching prospect and some others who will hopefully be ready to compete when Vlad comes up.
