Pre-Trip Dump (from greater boston)

In preparation of a trip, I want to dump the pics I have taken in the last few days. That way I can concentrate on whatever pics I get while on my trip.

Nothing special - just snaps taken on my rounds:

1. View of downtown Boston from Orient Heights in East Boston:

2.

3.

4. Looks like Maverick Square is getting a new building - see on the left. Anyone know about this?

5.

6.

7.

8. Madonna Queen National Shrine at Orient Heights (East Boston):

9.

10. Chapel within the shrine:

11. View from shrine:

40. Melrose:

41. Trinity Episcopal of Melrose:

42. People that live in stone houses should not throw glass. Does that saying work in reverse?

43. It is getting SPOOKY!

Not sure if I will be online much while traveling. Depends on the hotels.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for all of these tours of the Boston area. I hope I can make a trip up there sometime soon. Where are you going on your trip?

boston looks so quaint and cozy. what are the city's "rough" areas like? unfortunately, there are alot of annoying, spoiled new england kids at my uni, and they all talk down roxbury as being some sort of slum. however, when i saw your roxbury thread, i thought the exact opposite. jamaica plain? dorchester? i really don't know anymore. it all looks livable and pretty safe to me!

The overheard shots - the 1st shot especially - are money.

@ KOTH, there's some rougher looking parts of Boston but from what I saw they're not concentrated "ghettos" in the normal sense of the word. South End had beautiful rowhouses with mini parks in the middle of the street outfitted with water fountains, a beautiful stone church and trendy cafes sitting across the street from some rough looking projects on Washington & Mystic. As far as I can tell Boston is fairly mixed-income in the non-ritzy areas... I didn't see any truly ghettoized neighborhoods.

EDIT: Not to say that they don't exist, but I personally didn't see any.

I'm a sucker for the overhead shots too! Also, Expat, that Maverick Sq building is a new community health center.

If you're curious, these maps make it pretty clear that Dorchester (west of "Dot Ave"), the parts of Roxbury away from the universities/hospitals, and Mattapan are the roughest areas in Boston.

Thanks for another great photo thread! I think this is the first time I've seen Arlington in a photo thread - nice to see it!

Great pics again, Expat!

Thank you for showing us Boston and these neighbourhoods. I´ve liked those views from shrine. Seeing Logan again brings me a lot of nice memories.

Melrose is a beautiful neighbourhood too. Wonderful houses! I see some trees in yellow. It´s nice!

Those pumkins in the gardens are funny and pretty too.

Congrats and greetings from MAD, Spain!

Mattapan, parts of Dorchester are worse than Roxbury, IMO. Roxbury used to be pretty rough in the 80's and 90's. Jamaica Plain is quite safe and a pleasant neighborhood. Mission Hill area was sketchy, now its full of students from Northeastern Univ. and medical students that work in Longwood Medical area.

Expat, i was wondering when you would put the gorgeous Tudor on Larchmont Rd on one of your threads and the stone house on Waverly Ave is cool, huh? i grew up on the East Side, Upham Park as it's called, growing up and lived on Mt Hood Terrace after we got married......BTW, Arlington is one of Boston's greatest suburbs, highly rated in just about everything...

Thanks all for the great comments.

KOTH, I don't really know where the roughest areas are and glad others are willing to chime in with information. Honestly, I haven't see the kind of bombed out, all shops boarded up, crumbling pavement sort of rough areas in Boston that I have known in other cities I am familiar with. I am not saying it doesn't exist, I just haven't been there yet. One of these days I will seek it out because I know it would be interesting to many people. Or maybe you should come up and do the damage!

You really should visit sometime. Everyone should see Boston sooner or later. I am in New York right now.

Again, thanks to everyone for their comments! Much appreciated.

Thumbs down

What a beautiful old city. I like the juxtaposition of the old and the new. I am going to have to make a visit someday.

EDIT...

Sorry I did not mean to thumbs down this post. I do not know how that happened?

It is nice to see the view from the shrine during the day. When I visited that sight, it was at night (I didn't get any shots unfortunately). Thanks for sharing and have fun in NYC!
