I'm really pissed the East Side NIMBYs shortened these towers. It would have been nice to have 800-900 ft. Richard Meier towers.

^ Were the towers on the huge lot across the street shortened as well? I don't remember reading that, but maybe I missed it.

I'm all for community involvement and input, but the city desperately needs housing, this is Midtown, and this lot including the one across the street, are enormous.

2nd rendering is looking quite a bit Canadian or Fr, with our sort of balcony fetish.

Not saying it would be anything bad, it shows some interest in the outside somehome. But a narrow individual balcony is nothing like a shared rooftop. Actual larger terraces on top of apartments are easily the best.

I personally like plain glass curtains better, like to the 1st rendering.

I heard that didn't manifest as of yet. They wanted to convert some old substations to park land I believe. I might be thinking in Queens though, across the river from this site. The Con-Ed plant on 59th Street is still active. I was there a couple of weeks ago for a meeting. Word of the wise, never wear the white hat at a con-ed site. They don't like that. A white hat is royalty at con-ed, and if your with another company, wear a different hat even if your management, and not a blue hard hat either!

Richard Meier’s first NYC skyscraper starts its climb above street level in Turtle Bay
December 2, 2016

Quote:
Richard Meier’s 685 First Avenue–the starchitect’s largest and tallest building in the city to date–has begun its above-ground ascent, reports CityRealty. The 42-story, 460-foot-tall slab tower is located along the East River at 40th Street, just south of the United Nations, and has gained attention for its dark glass facade, a noticeable shift from Meier’s signature beige aesthetic. Its 408 rentals and 148 condominiums are expected to be completed by early 2019, and now that construction is “craned and above street level,” the project is well on its way.

Very mediocre exterior design and very gloomy. Gloomy in a weird, shiny way.

speaking of "Gloomy", Michagain . .
big, bad, mean, & "Gloomy", . . could be very cool . . .
but 685 First Ave. is not that . .
this slick, boring, mid-height glass box, . .
even though it's black, . . isn't dynamic enough to be "gloomy" . .

there are probably some tall, awesome Richard Meier skyscrapers
somewhere . . but offhand, I can't think of any . . . anybody ? . .
the above article mentioned "Meier’s signature beige aesthetic" . .
I thought his signature aesthetic was White White . .

I wish the UN would build a taller box to the South . .
one complementing the Secretariat box . .
one of the few boxes in town, along with Trump World Tower Box . .
that "work" really well in the skyline . .

Renderings Capture Modernist Elegance of Richard Meier's Tallest NYC Tower
Quote:
A new round of renderings for the 42-storey 685 First Avenue development has been released to coincide with the start of construction, depicting a refined elegance courtesy of East River Partners and Richard Meier & Partners Architects. A leader in clean Modernist design, the 140-metre (460-foot) tower will be the practice's tallest in New York City.

The 685 First Avenue site is a 32,365 SF parcel located between East 39th and East 40th Streets on First Avenue in New York City south of the United Nations Headquarters along the East River, a prominent location in Manhattan. The 42-story, 460-foot high residential tower will provide 556 rental and condominium apartments and will feature panoramic views of the New York City riverfront. Minimalistic in form, great consideration is given to the materiality, lightness, transparency and order of this predominantly glass building. The idea of ‘façade as skin,’ a taut curtain wall incised with modular subdivisions is articulated with selective metal panel elements in the form of balconies, canopies and corners. A distinguishing feature is an architectural cut-out at the 27th and 28th floors, visible from across the East River delineating the program subdivision and in dialogue with the neighboring context buildings. The singular form of 685 First Avenue is borne of a desire to create an iconic building unique to Midtown Manhattan and the city of New York. The project reflects an innovative and timeless design that contributes to the history and influence of the city’s landmark buildings. Iconic, transparent and minimal in expression, its style brings the open-layout feel of converted downtown industrial spaces uptown. It will be the first all-black glass building and the tallest tower in New York City designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects in collaboration with East River Realty Development LLC. At street level, the project is designed to promote urban activity by providing retail space along First Avenue and a grand residential lobby shared by all residents. The expansive glazing of the double-height lobby has a direct visual and physical connection with the surrounding context, the future public park and the East River. The light colored materials of this space rely on principles of light, order and geometry to create a modern and open space.
