That's just like the fine folks in Michigan who prefer to call yellow maize.

Have you been watching America Unearthed on the History channel?

On an episode I saw yesterday they were theorizing about the Aztecs being in Wisconsin because of a "pyramid like" rock pile discovered by fisherman in a little lake.

It was the Mississippian culture if the structure was indeed built by man but it was likely that culture which influenced the later ones in Mexico and Central America.

Not sure what any of this has to do with this thread but the Aztec's ("Mexica" is their own name for themselves...) migrated from as area know at Aztlan in what is now northern Mexico and the SW US.... you know... the part we stole from the people who stole it from them.
Actually The "Mexica" stole the the region they settled from other tribes.... so I guess it;s all just a little bit of history repeating.

Sidenote... which is possibly why we have the "Aztex's" Soccer name.... this could/might/kinda be considered part of Aztlan.

Aztex is just a play on Austin, Texas (ATX).

Yeah, I watched some show on the Aztecs that showed old maps labeling SW U.S. as Aztec land. It was possibly the Unearthed show.

As for stealing the land, I don't really buy all that. If we want to get down to it, much of the populated land in the world is "stolen" in that sense if you go back far enough. We're all just renting the land. We'll die off or another group will eventually take the land back.

Yup. And this is one aspect of human nature that we don't get to feel uniquely guilty about, since every population and species is continually battling for territory. Even plants commit genocide by deploying phytotoxins, fire accelerants, and other forms of chemical warfare. My plant ecology professor joked about our tendency to look at natural scenes and see beauty and serenity, when in fact everything we're looking at is trying to eat, kill, or displace everything else.

I have absolutely no idea how to bring this back on topic.

Even butterflies take over territory from one another. Speaking of butterflies, does anybody know how the Butterfly Bridge got it's name? Was there a naming contest or something?

Nobody named it 'butterfly' except for KVUE. They mistook what the Project Manager was saying. She was explaining that it is a canted arch or 'butterfly' bridge, which is a bridge type.

Ohhhh, NOW I get it! When the first arch went up and I didn't see any signs of a second waiting in the (butterfly?) wings, I assumed it would only have the one arch. And from the photos posted here, it looked like it was spanning from the left on the near side to the right on the far side. I thought that was an interesting idea, but not very attractive. I kept my mouth (keyboard?) shut because I just assumed that my eyes were not deceiving me.

In another thread, I thought that an actual house was just a mural painted on the wall of the parking garage behind it. Might be time to get my eyes checked.

That's hilarious. Think the name will stick now that everyone thinks that's the name? Haha.

Unfortunately, I think the name will stick for a while. At least until it gets officially named for a dead person. This is Texas, after all.

Ooh. I likey. That first view especially is nice. I'll look forward to seeing it lit. Man, can you imagine that view once everything is done??? By the way, judging from that you may even be able to see University House sticking up there since you can see 21Rio. I remember being able to see Callaway House at one point before something else (?) blocked it from view.
