San Antonio Sketchup Models

Since there's an excellent Austin thread, I thought I might start one on SA. I'm just figuring out how to use Google Sketchup and Kerkythea rendering software, but I thought I'd start with one of SA's biggest, and easiest, too, the Weston Centre. Google Earth has only a few pitiful models for SA, so I thought maybe we could all start modelling some. When I come back to town I'm going to take a bunch of pics with this in mind. I opted not to use photo-textures for my model, even though I have a bunch of pics of the Weston, because I wanted to render reflections in the glass (I'll make it darker) in Kerkythea. I also guessed as to the landscaping around the building based on the Google Earth and Virtual Earth aerial pics. I know the river is a good 15-20' below street level here, with a stone retaining wall, but I have to go take a closer look when I'm in town to get it right. I'm also going to make the windows smaller...

I was actually thinking about doing the same thing the other day. I was gonna start w/ the Weston Centre, but was having trouble coming up w/ the dimensions. I have the real dimensions for the Grand Hyatt, so I call that one haha

The renderings of the Weston you did are hands-down fantastic, and I'm glad to see my favorite building in 3D

Cool. Looking forward to seeing more. Let me know if you guys need pics of any particular buildings. I have some. Also check out Emporis for some too.

This seems to be a popular trend. Ive made a fictional city(see my sig,its pretty cool) I tried FW awile ago in full 3d,no pictures, but just kinda forgot about it.

If your Kerky glass actually glass? if you use metel it will just reflect but not be see through, which is a big help out, cause then you cant see through buildings.

if you didnt already know http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/forumdisplay.php?f=159

Oh and if you need any help Id love to!

Sweetness! I was wondering how soon (if ever) some SA folks were gonna start doing sketchup. I've only dabbled in it a tiny bit, trying to design my own city and whatnot, but I love to hear everybody's suggestions for how to get more out of it.

Thanks you guys! I'm working on a texture-based Weston right now, and then I'll turn to the rest of DT. The problem is, I really want to include the river, which requires working above and below street level, because most buildings have lower entrances at river level.

ydoc14-- Can't wait to see the GH! You better nail it!

Austin55- thanks for the tip about the glass! I'll try that. I've been working on a lot of other stuff in both Sketchup and KT, but I'm kind of all over the map trying things.
Here's a couple made-up city renders I've attempted:

I've done a few more I haven't posted to Flickr just yet.

As for the Weston Centre-- it's a combination of my own photo/sighting measurements, measurements made from Google Earth (which I don't entirely trust), Emporis figures, and guessing.
I'll post the texture version just as soon as it's done!

Here's the GH in progress. Working on the base facade right now. Oh, and please don't charge me for each day it's not done

Ok, so I redid the WC with photo textures (mine), but I missed something (see if you can spot it). In any event, I placed it in GE and screencapped it, and did some more KT renders.

Hey- If you want I can do the Holiday Inn Riverwalk,Ive got a texture that might work.

It looks way better photo textured. to be honest I dont think rendering cities makes that much of a difference, they look just as good unrendered,IMO. it kinda depends on whether its worth the hassel.

Oh and I see yu missed the big window! just cut the edges of the base texture and make it 4x bigger on the sides and itll fit without sacraficing detial. If this didnt make any sense,Ill explain further.

Edit- Finished the HISA,low polygon and all,the texture is actually from Dallas,One main place, but looks good anyway. search your name at
3Dwarehouse,my name there is " Micro". some of it is kinda guestimated, but you can fix it up if you want. its also not to scale,I wasnt sure what your scale was.
