It was my only guess, given that meddling of such kind has happened on numerous occasions when neighbors are consulted as per the process of requesting a zoning change (cf. Belmont/Clark, 3928 N. Sheridan for recent cases). And my "...would really like to believe" statement was said in earnest, so I am happy to hear that such meddling was not the case here.

That being said, there is a clear departure between the design as presented last night and that presented last Fall that strongly suggests that a revision was requested by some other party, and per Mr D's remarks about some of the guidelines of the landmark area, the changes accord exactly in those respects. Granted, I applaud the recommendations (/requirements?) such that they provide legible criteria that can be translated successfully into designs that don't perturb the harmony of the historic area, but they need to be flexible enough that they aren't prescribing ersatz-historic duds that end up looking more inharmonious among their neighbors than a design that departs but yet carries the spirit of the older stock.

Printing House Row landmark district has no "guidelines" other than the general ones that new buildings should "exhibit the general size and shape" of the contributing buildings, and must not pretend to be historic. Landmarks staff would usually also ask for materials and fenestration characteristic to the district.

LG has already met with Landmarks staff about this building, though I don't know if they've been cleared to proceed to Permit Review Committee.

The original LG design had a grid of brick, this new one has more of a vertical emphasis in line with Chicago School style. They kept the acute corners and material palette, as far as I can tell.

Ultimately the rendering from last night, filtered through a grainy low-light photograph and projector screen, is not enough for me to form an opinion good or bad about the latest revisions.

The renderings are clearly attributed to nARCHITECTS and Vertebrae architects in the Curbed article from Sept.
No, not quite. Several of the images shown are EXAMPLE micro apartments from projects in other cities, and those are the ones from the two firms you listed.

LG actually has a decent amount of design expertise in house and the ability to produce renderings without having an architect on board. The fact that they've hired Myefski to produce a drawing set just means the design has been refined from the initial sketch phase.

Yes, one crane visible here on the NE portion of the site (where the 5-story garage/Jewel will be built) and one nearer the alley, on the SW/central portion of the site, for which they spent yesterday pouring a concrete base.

Quick question for crane-savvy folks, though: Are cranes often erected a full 10 stories higher than the structures they're used to build? I ask because the NE crane here seemingly will be used only to build the 5-story garage/Jewel structure, yet they erected it to a cabin-height (not including the additional truss-pylon) of ~15 stories. Seems like it's about 60-75' taller than to be expected, but maybe not??

So here is a thing, the 1001 S State building definitely has a bit of a sun concentration effect to the south east.

But we live in a world where 9/10 people thinks the above building "looks really nice" especially so of the average Joe Sixpack.

It's a hard life for us architecture snobs. Shangri La is out there, but I'm fairly sure it's across the ocean.

What is it about Pappageorge that drives so many developers to their doors? Are they SEO optimized for 'cheap Chicago architect'?

HPA is getting a near equal amount of work this boom, but they're at least doing good-great work.
