I haven't been on any dedicated photo shoots recently, but I have taken to carrying a cheapo little pocket camera around with me just about wherever I go. Naturally this means I have started taking a lot of random low-quality pictures of whatever I happen to see while I'm out and about.
Here are a bunch of such pictures from this spring, except for the first one which is obviously from autumn. Also it's not technically from the District of Columbia. You'll just have to deal.
Rosslyn skyline from the George Washington Parkway.
Infill, Logan Circle neighborhood. Note bikesharing guy.
Infill, Petworth neighborhood.
Wisconsin Avenue, Tenleytown neighborhood. The large building in the background is the National Cathedral, which at 301 feet tall is the 4th tallest building in DC.
Archway, Silver Spring, MD.
This store in the Dupont Circle neighborhood put out colored tape in the arrangement of neighborhood streets. Fun.
Rosslyn skyline and Potomac River, from the Georgetown waterfront. The plane is on approach to Reagan National Airport, which follows the river. Note the standing kayaker. Apparently that's a thing now.
Same spot, more centered on Rosslyn.
Kennedy Center.
These next few are all from Georgetown.
Wisconsin Avenue.
M Street.
I usually hate large scale modernism, but I love it in small doses like this.
The Air Force Memorial as seen from Georgetown.
The line at Georgetown Cupcake, made famous by the TLC reality show
DC Cupcake. They are admittedly very good, but there are way too many great cupcake places in the city to waste time in that line.
lol, Georgetown.
Spires of central DC as seen from Georgetown. The one in the foreground on the right is a mosque's minaret. The others are all churches in Mid City.
Downtown office building undergoing a facadectomy. The old grey facade is being replaced by a new glass one. There's a lot of this going on. Apparently the architects of downtown Washington have almost universally decided that plain glass boxes are the future.
New condo buildings in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.
The Potomac River, taken from a moving bus going over the Key Bridge. The picture is notable for the three islands in the middle of the river, which are called the Three Sisters. They are named after an old Native American legend about three Powhatan princesses who drowned while trying to swim across the river at that point, and cursed the river to never be crossed safely at that spot again. Since then there have been at least four attempts to build a bridge there, all of which have failed.
More info here.
Rowhouses, Dupont Circle neighborhood.
This is not a real country. I have no idea what the story is.
Small garden in the Dupont Circle neighborhood.
The Spanish Steps at 22nd and S Streets, which has become a favorite spot of mine.
These next three are from Rock Creek Park.
The tennis stadium at Rock Creek Park.
Connecticut Avenue, Dupont Circle neighborhood.
Condo infill in Columbia Heights.
17th Street on Capital Pride weekend.
Fabulous.
Random downtown office buildings.
Farragut Square.
18th Street, around the border of Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods.
These next 8 are all from the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia.
Church with affordable housing being built above. Yay for mixed-use!
This is a new building. Anyone who says you can't do ornament on new buildings is wrong.
Buildings on 11th Street in the Logan Circle neighborhood, including the headquarters of the
US High Speed Rail Association. If you look closely you can see their logo in the transom panel above one of the doors.
11th Street, Logan.
A butterfly enjoys himself in Senate Park.
Senate Park again.
Heh.
Gryphons are undeniably awesome.
Silenced George Washington mural on U Street. It is in reference to DC's lack of representation in Congress.
Rowhouses, Logan Circle neighborhood.
New building going up on H Street. I think it's interesting because it mixes traditional form with obviously contemporary details. I'll take this over a glass box 10 times out of 10.
Essential.
Stay tuned for Part 2!
