Wally Buono vs. Alain Vigneault: who's a better coach?

Who takes the cake as a better coach: Wally for the Lions for Alain for the Cannots?

Wally just won Coach Of The Year. I know it's a bit of a difficult comparison as football and hockey are coached in different ways.

But when I hear Alain during post game interviews I just roll my eyes. He sounds so boring; no intensity or enthusiasm like Mike Keenan or some others.

At least with Wally you hear some direction and purpose in his voice. He seems to do a better job of addressing reporter's questions. Alain just seems to spin his tires. Agree?

Well, I'll take either over Iron Mike Keenan

As for the Canucks specifically, I'm still disappointed they didn't pick up Ted Nolan when they had the chance.

Wally Buono:
in 329 games coached (W-L-T): 215-106-3 (as of the end of 2007 season)
grey cup winning teams: 1992, 1998, 2001, 2006

Alain Vigneault:
in 430 games coached (W-L-T): 197-172-35
stanley cup winning teams...still waiting...

statistically speaking, Buono is clearly the better coach with a 66% of his games won, compared to Alain Vigneault's 45%.

The Canucks lost again tonight, I think its time to get rid of AV and let Ryan Walter to take over.

Sundin has clearly thrown off the chemistry.

0 - 4!

It's hard to compare the two - football coaches delegate to a large degree, but in terms of running an organization and judging talent (and knowing when to pull the chute on a player just beginning the downward slope in his career), few are better than Mr. Buono.

Vignault is a good coach that's been put in the untenable situation of trying to win games with sub-par goaltending.

I have to agree. Vigneault, as much as he is a defensive minded coach, is a smart one. I'm not sure whether it's his coaching, or whether the teams he's inherited just forgot how to score goals. As bad as this slide has been (5 straight home losses - had we won them all, that's 10 points in the standing right there), we're going to get out of it. Hopefully, the Canucks do not lose against the Coyotes on Thursday. If he does, heads will soon roll. Luongo will be back against Phoenix, but that doesn't guarantee a win, considering he's been out 7 weeks (since late November). I think we'll make the playoffs, but just barely.

Here's to a good win on Thursday against the Coyotes!

Hate to bring up an old topic like this, but Wally Buono tied Don Matthews for the most wins by a CFL coach. Vigneault has a LONG way to go before he ties Scotty Bowman for the NHL coach with the most wins.

Vigneault is a good coach, but he's no Scotty Bowman.
