I don't mind the skywalk system. What bothers me is that these particular ones are so huge, ugly and dated that it ruins the streetscape.

Yes. Take the stores out (most of which have become dirt cheap community space), cut them in half, make them glass and remove the tall roof. Make them like the new TNS ones, but maybe a bit wider.
