heh, Jimmy Packer's been busy.

FYI the Packer family is Australia's richest and were controlling parties in PBL - Publishing and Broadcasting Limited which owned assets like the Nine Network (our CBS/ABC/NBC etc), multiple magazine titles and Crown Casino in Melbourne. James PAcker was always more interested in the gaming assets so he flogged off the Nine Network & other media assets to a private equity consortium which is based in Sydney after he took control when his dad died and kept the gaming businesses (primarily Crown & Burswood Casino in Perth) for himself which is based in Melbourne.

anyhow, enough back story.

I really like this tower. Reminds me of a cross between CN Tower, the Seattle Space Needle and the terminal building at LAX. I hope it gets built. That would be awesome. And I'm with TexasStar, put the US back in the skyscraper race.

Yeah, but Kerry Packer was the most legendary in the family. I remember one weekend when he was in town and he won over $20,000,000 at MGM and their stock price went down.

NORM: Packer's tips, bets no urban myths

One million dollars was tip money to Kerry Packer, the Australian gazillionaire who died this week.

"He regularly tipped Bellagio dealers $1 million. All 700 dealers would get a cut," recalled Bobby Baldwin, on the telephone from his office as Mirage Resorts president and chief executive officer.

I called Baldwin to ask him about some Packer stories that had the ring of urban myth.

The story about the Texan?

"True," Baldwin said.

Packer was at one table and the Texan, playing one table over, wanted some bigger action.

Packer turned him down. "The other guy said, 'I'm a big player too. I'm worth a hundred million.'

"Kerry said, 'If you really want to gamble, I'll flip you for it (the $100 million)." The Texan quietly went back to his game.

And Packer's monster tip to an MGM Grand cocktail server?

Also true, Baldwin said.

"He liked the service the girl was providing. He asked her if she had a mortgage. She said yes, and he said, 'Bring it in tomorrow and I'll pay it off for you.' It was for $150,000."

The $200,000 bets per hand?

Also true.

Damn. I almost made a post at SSC saying "Las Vegas is almost turning into Dubai." Funny thing, it crossed my mind for a second as a serious thought.

When should we hear the next piece of news on this building? Is it most likely going to be built? Seems so, but just wanted others opinions. I'm not too familiar on this project and read through a lot of this thread.

This building is so massive, I love it!!

^I think they said that it was pushed back until the 22nd of this month. You should probably hear something around then.

^in which at that time the reviw will be pushed back in another 1-2 months.

As much as I want this mofo built, I'm getting less optimistic about this project, with FAA breathing down its neck about its height and proximity to Nellis and McCarran.

So is the Town Advisory Board meeting still scheduled for the 22nd? And what are these meetings like?

Love it or hate it, we all know that we're anxious to see if this gets the thumbs up or thumbs down tomorrow.

We all anxiously await the ultimate decision on this tower.

You can watch using the link on this page:
http://www.co.clark.nv.us/Public_com...ideostream.htm

Item is no. 52. So watch and listen to see what items are being heard, they may unfortunately have a tendency to skip some items and move some items to be heard separately first before others, especially important ones like Crown Las Vegas! So it doesn't always follow in sequential order.

Agenda Sheet>
http://dsnet.co.clark.nv.us/dsnetapp...2207bccweb.htm

I will not be able to watch this, so other will have to do so, if you have the time try taking screenshots as they will more than likely show renders of whatever is to be approved.

>>>Real Player (yeah I hate this thing too but the county uses it so not much choice)
To take a screenshot from Real Player you must open the 'tools' dropdown box and select 'preferences'. In the new window select 'hardware' from the category list on the left. Then under the 'video card compatibility' section slide the slider all the way to the left so it says 'disable optimized video and overlays'. Now you should be able to take screen shots from Real Player. You can change it back afterwards if you want.

When the image you want is shown, just press the print scr key on your keyboard, then open up a graphics editor such as mspaint (all windows OS should have it) and go to edit>paste. The image will appear and you can then save it.

Forumers on SSC are reporting that the county pushed the discussion back to mid-september.
Are they awaiting word from the FAA? or are they waiting for a new design since there are more players involved now than just Milam?
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out ..... but we've been saying that for months now ......

Likely a combination of both, or even if they had FAA approval the new plans may have significantly changed the project design, and maybe those plans weren't finished yet thus no meeting could happen.

Still the fact it's come up again and again means someone's doing something. Many canceled projects get approval and we never see any follow up meetings for more indepth plans.

Whoever said that they were competing against the Sears Tower? I think that this would be an awesome development for a city that is booming with development.

DetKing12565's IP actually routes to Canton, MI, in metro detroit, but his post was still entirely unnecessary. if vegas can muster the drive and economics to build this tower, then there's no reason that it shouldn't be built.

at the present time las vegas is competing against Macau in China, Atlantic City and casinos like foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun. Each hotel in town is also competing against each other.

the las vegas tower is not competing against the Sears tower, the spire, freedom tower, burj dubai, cn tower or any other tall building. It is competing against the wynn, bellagio, venetian, caesars and echelon though and its uniqueness and drawing power (if ever built) will be its height.
