I'd rather have the parking lot util something decent comes along.
I can wait.
As can I. Unfortunately the first financially viable plan that comes along will probably get built, aesthetics be damned. Community-building potential be damned. And what really bothers me is that because these ugly buildings are new, there's no chance of them being re-clad or demolished. So they'll sit there for decades. All we can hope for is that the infill causes land values to rise to the point where new projects are forced to build upward.

Whether they have any perceived beauty or visual appeal is up to the bulider and design firm. One can only hope.

The reason for the ugly back side is so there can be another building go up next to it. Give it a few yrs. and we will see a new building rise next to it.

Topping out ceremony video with the last steel beam being lifted. Notice the tree attached to it.

I really like Hyatt Place. Most of the negativity towards it is focused on the blank wall. But it's clearly blank because another high rise will eventually butt up against.

I like it too. It's turned out to be quite handsome, IMO.

I personally don't like it but it does look pretty cool watching that glass poking out from the skyline when you're driving on I35.

I don't think I'll ever LIKE it, but by reminding me that the fugly backside is eventually very likely to be hidden by another building sometime in the future, I feel a little better, because from the street, it really doesn't look that bad. It doesn't look good, but it really doesn't look too bad.

Other than the blank wall, my only other gripe with it is I wish it was a solid color. Those accents around the windows are fine, but I just don't get the two tones with that strip of lighter color at the top. But, I'm still glad it's there.

I think the dark color a floor higher on either side of the glass kind of draws your eye upward toward the peak of the glass. I don't mind two tone. The actual tones they chose could have been better, I guess. Looks like they were trying to go with a UT theme.

Also remember that even thought it is hard to say when something will be built on the uship lot, the Mariott will effectively block that blank wall unless you are within a block of the Hyatt on Brazos St. It would be a much bigger issue IMO if it was on the uship lot as the blank wall would be facing i35 and nothing to block it with the convention center there. This way, we know the line of sight that it can be viewed will be limited regardless of what happens with future development.

Hyatt Place is taking reservations beginning 03/05. So they managed to be open for SxSW.

So I take it this is completed then? I haven't been by there to see it. I guess it must be open by now if they're planning on having hotel guests by March 5th.

Their facebook page says today is their first day with their entire staff. So I would say it could be considered completed either today or on 03/05 when they start taking reservations.

While it still looks cheap, it's not nearly as bad when viewed as just another infill project along San Jacinto, you might even say it distracts from the ugliness of the Hampton Inn. I think it fits in quite well.

Ugh. . .picture says it all:

1. Boxy midrise
2. brown with tan top
3. utterly uninteresting
4. Fits perfectly with nearby boxy completely uninteresting brown and tan topped buildings.
5. is a slight improvement over surface parking lots
6. plaintive "CHRIST" in the foreground. . .as if to say "christ, is this the best we can do?"

It looks like a strip mall-turned-skyscraper.

The only benefit is that it creates some interesting caverns. Feels really dense in that area now.

Agreed to the above comments. It's why I would rather see the parking lots until something more interesting comes along. Those are truly "LCD": Lowest Common denominator buildings.
