That last pic really puts Winnipeg to shame; it does not have one street that is so vibrant, with a continuous stretch of commerce and lovely restored architecture. Very nice!

I lived in Winnipeg for several years. It does well. The Exchange during some kind of festival is as busy as Water Street at the height of summer. And Portage may not have the same density of businesses (they tend to be bigger buildings, etc.) but it's just as active at lunch time on a week day.

The Village and Croydon are kind of similar to Water Street, just add more shops instead of restaurants.

The catch with St. John's is it's so small we really only have two streets as active as the above, and the little side ones that connect them (like George Street, which is basically a back lane between the two). So that's it.

So don't get the wrong impression. That said, Water Street is genuinely very active, especially in the summer and especially when our economy is better. I've been in cities with hundreds of thousands more people that I personally never saw get as busy as a summer Tuesday afternoon on Water Street. But once you get up to around 750K and larger, it's busier elsewhere. And the size of our busy area is small even for our population, let alone what someone coming from Winnipeg would expect.

We basically have two Croydons parallel to each other, with a back lane in between that is like the Village. Everything else here is Linden Woods or worse.

I am from there, so I have no lack of knowledge about Winnipeg. The Village is not so exciting; it COULD be, but not a lot of investment there. Corydon, meh, nothing has really changed along it in decades. It should have at least a few mid-rise towers along it by now, but nope. The Exchange still has to many vacant and derelict buildings. The really sad part is based on St. John's economy, and history of economic depression over the last several decades, there is so much pride in its downtown vs Winnipeg's with decent population growth. They all pale in comparison to Water Street IMO.

(Me from 2012 is dying at my position in this conversation lol. When I first moved home, I was still suffering whatever mental impact homesick depression had on me, and I was a real bitch about Winnipeg).

Ottawa just had a weekend of la Machine, a French production from Nantes that brought a giant spider and horse-dragon to the city. 750,000 people came out to see it over the 4 days.

Gorgeous set, as always. Love painted brick. I love it unpainted also... but there's just something about painted brick that feels... authentic to me? I interpret it as indicating a neighbourhood that's gentrified, but not pretentious.

My favourite is probably Bilbao but I'd take Montreal's design over Moscow, although like most brutalist architecture, Montreal's stations suffer aesthetically from stains and patching, but the maintenance is a somewhat separate issue from the original design. But I suppose you could say that the long term aging and maintenance should be factors in a design.

Yes, a design should account for the material character, inside and out, over the building's anticipated lifetime. From material degradation to staining, this should be an important consideration. Architect's should question the point of their efforts if a design is going to look worn, marked and crumbling - things that too often occur within a building's first year.

For me, this is a bit of a pet peeve. It is all too frequent. As an issue, it is a difficult one for architects having to use manufactured products that are changing all the time. But a lot of the problem is avoidable with better material choices, better material system choices, and better detailing. BETTER DETAILING. And, while maintenance can be a factor, architects also need to design to reasonable standards of maintenance. These things are too often poorly thought out, if at all.

On topic: Montreal stations are good, some very good. I'm not into the Moscow extravagance. London has some great stations and station spaces. I also like the invisible, like Vienna, Milan, Berlin, (many systems have at least some of this) where a lot of stations simply dissolve into underground complexes.
