It's crazy that MacInnis never won one here, he did in St Louis though. Too bad Gio got that bicep tear a couple years back, he was on pace for a Norris.

Norris trophy is probably the regular season award most heavily-correlated with Stanley Cup success.

The biggest dynasties since 2000 have mostly been anchored by a top defenseman. Red Wings with Lidstrom, Chicago with Keith, LA (more of a mini-dynasty) with Doughty. Chara was key to the Bruins playoff success.

Really only Pittsburgh hasn't had that top defensive talent to carry them through the playoffs.

Chicago officially eliminated from the playoffs, who's next?

Ottawa, Detroit and Edmonton all look to have a death number of 1 point for either the last wildcard team or not getting 2 points in their next game.

After that it will be a while even if the teams really are done.

Arizona and Vancouver are out already. Both teams are 27 points back from a wildcard spot. Buffalo is also out.

The 90s sort of say the opposite, though. Awful teams had Norris winners (Chelios in Chicago, Blake in LA, Coffey in Detroit)...MacInnis and Pronger won it in back-to-back years in St. Louis and they didn't even make SCFs. Karlsson, Subban, and Burns are all D that have won without winning the SC.

You can make the case that having a Norris defenseman equals good Stanley Cup odds, but a Norris-quality defenseman does not guarantee you a Cup, either.

Does Norris = best defenseman or highest scoring defenseman?

It's supposed to be the best overall defenseman, but obviously scoring ends up playing a large part in the voting.

Best defenseman, however you want to quantify that. The PWHA lists it as the defenseman that best demonstrates the all-around ability of the position. There's a new award, the Rod Langway Award, which goes to the best defensive defenseman.

Best defenseman. You show me a high scoring defenseman and he could just as easily be a defensive liability who is often out of position (amirite fellow Winnipeggers) as he is a quarterback who is good at setting up plays.

Then there's the Brian McCabe award for the best pylon.

Sounds like a joke from 2005.

Not defending McCabe but he had 500+ points in 1100+ games and was a career +37. If he was an actual pylon he probably wouldn't have played for fifteen seasons.

^It's definitely a 2005 joke.

But, not to be one without evidence...

Oh man I remember that own goal...

Him and Kaberle were money on the powerplay though.

Well, I suppose it is the first time that Vegas has ever had the opportunity to be influenced by hometown bias, in any professional sport, so maybe we should give them a pass. haha

What a disappointing season for the Flames. I think the coaching staff has to go (GG and Dave Cameron particularly), given how poor the PP / PK were and how poorly motivated the players were to play a full 60 so many times this season. I'd say Treviling has his work cut out for him this offseason.

These were the same people who predicted Edmonton to win the cup this year and Vegas to not make the playoffs. They also predicted the Jets would not make the playoffs. I hold so much faith in their predictions.
