The Ultimate Canadian "Unbuilt Projects" Thread

Hey everyone,

I know we've had many "unbuilt projects" threads on this subforum over the years, but I've recently been digging into a couple of them and have found that a lot of material and images have gone missing, with many article links becoming broken beyond repair, or various imageshack/photobucket/etc accounts being closed.

I am currently compiling a large amount of images that show projects that have either fallen through, been passed over for alternate designs, were intended as a zoning exercise, or just so insane that they would have never been built anyway. Some are very old and I have had to dig through archived webpages to recover the images.

The goal of this thread is to create a sort of a consolidated index that contains images for unbuilt and unrealized projects all across Canada. I would love for people to help contribute to this thread, so I can compile everything by editing the main post, and host all of the images externally/publicly on Imgur, so they (hopefully) won't disappear over time.

I will be arranging the unbuilt projects by city, from coast to coast:

Both for Yorkville Square - part of an international design contest for a zoning exercise.

Great thread, Eric. Thanks for putting it together.

A lot of bullets dodged here. Toronto got so lucky. I remember when the Sapphire Tower was proposed, and I was appalled by what I saw. It looks like something China would have built back in 1995.

I've always been very disappointed Cameco opted not to build that tower in Saskatoon. The skyline could use a distinct, impressive tower like that.

That corner is currently the site of a single storey Hudson's if I'm not mistaken. It could be so much more.

That would basically been a clone of the Sheraton Centre in Toronto.

Thank you all for the material so far, guys! I have uploaded all of these images to Imgur and have updated the main post. I have also added some other new material for some other buildings.

Several of the Toronto aren't un-built and are still in early design stages like this one. This render was just created for massing and was never a serious design.

Here was it's latest design.

I'm well aware of the process behind One Front. I have indicated on the root post that One Front was a zoning exercise. As I also mentioned, this thread is also inclusive of alternate designs and zoning exercises for extra flavour.

I consider rejected early massings as "unbuilt" since they did, indeed, not get built and do not represent the final product in any way. While it is true that One Front and Cumberland Terrace are still in design, the ones posted here are not representative of the chosen design that is currently being refined.

But how can something that was never going to be built be unbuilt? Those designs are just created to get investors interested in a properties potential.

^Agreed. What a beaut!

I can't find a good render of it, but Weston Tower was a TO proposal in the early-'90s.

I feel like Montréal ended up with a shorter version of the same with Tour de la Bourse.
