Two lanes each way underground. Wouldn't be cheap, but it would be worth it.

Such a long tunnel would be fantastically expensive to build and even more difficult to keep dry. I can't imagine any realistic benefit from that project that would outweigh the multi-billion dollar cost.

With that being said, I think it could be possible to eliminate the highway and add lanes to Claiborne, and still end up with an urban-friendly design. Tear down everything between Elysian Fields and Poydras and replace it with an 8-lane surface boulevard, something like the West Side Highway in New York. That fits into 150' wide, while Claiborne is 165'-185' so there's even room for a generous neutral ground or turn lanes that New York doesn't have. Put in some cobblestone accents and frequent signalized crosswalks for pedestrians.

Now the West Side Highway handles about 60000 cars/day while the I-10 carries about 100000, but you'd lose some traffic as many drivers would choose a different route and businesses shifted around.

Not sure how another rfp would change it for the airport either. Its a tough sell to me, considering all the other issues involved with doing this project.

The high minimum rent payments and no provided parking were likely deal killers. The whole DBE thing with the city has gotten out of control. And I know the airport is somewhat separate, but the city hasn't exactly got a great track record with these sorts of deals, given the WTC project being dragged out for years and the Piazza d'Italia lots deal falling through.

Exactly, the market has spoken and said not interested in a deal with this much red tape.

He definitely did . Had a great run so will be interesting to see who replaces him. Considering how much better shape the airports in and of course will be , I'm sure the potential recruiting pool is much better than it would have been. Excited for airports next chapter ! He definitely accomplished what he set out to do !

Low barrier homeless shelter location announced

3101 Erato Street. It's not the worst location they could have picked. At least it's surrounded by industrial and institutional buildings, and not in the middle of the CBD.

its probably best spot possible. And still close enough downtown that it will be used!

They closed off the parking lot and started demoing the building at 618 Magazine St today. It looks like someone was also taking some professional photographs of the Reily Foods Company mural at 700 Magazine.
