http://www.delawareonline.com/story/...gton/99684070/

Quote:
Buccini/Pollin Group, a Wilmington-based developer which owns many city properties, is buying the 728 N. Market St. building, as well as another one Hackett owns next door.
...
Michael J. Hare, Buccini/Pollin's senior vice president for development... said there are no immediate plans for the buildings, but he said the Leo & Jimmy's property will remain 'some kind of food service or eatery.'

Wilmington: 7 x Market restoration project

The "Wilmington Optical" letters had just been taken down when I grabbed this, and you can see where power washer (?) testing was done on the 2nd floor above the side (7th St.). Appears work is plugging away inside on upper floors.

Construction coming to Swarthmore College as $450M capital campaign launches

Quote:
The prestigious Swarthmore College is planning to begin work constructing the largest building on its campus this summer, a project that continues the institution's drive to connect disciplines and coincides with a $450 million capital campaign.

The future home of the biology, engineering and psychology departments, the building will be at least 158,000 square feet, according to the college.

"For the future of so many science disciplines, it involves interdisciplinary learning and research," Swarthmore College President Valerie Smith told the Philadelphia Business Journal in an exclusive interview. "It will foster more collaborative research opportunities for faculty, and for faculty and students."

Demoliton of Papazian Hall, set to occur in June, will be the first step in constructing the new "BEP" building, which is expected to be completed in three years.

Why Camden has the potential to be a hotbed of start-ups

Quote:
The first phase begins April 18 with the official opening of Waterfront Lab, a coworking space inside the former National State Bank at 121 Market St. If Tran’s plans are realized, two more will follow this year to help fulfill his aim of attracting 100 or more start-ups to a city that has long talked of a revival.

It’s too early to know whether Tran’s long view for Camden will become reality. But he’s not the only believer.

“I think it’s a better time than ever to make a concerted effort to build a technology economy in Camden,” said Robert Moore, who moved his business-data analytics software start-up, RJ Metrics, from his attic in Collingswood to Camden in summer 2009, staying there until recruiting needs – mostly for engineers – necessitated a move to Center City Philadelphia in 2011. He and partner Jake Stein sold the company to California-based Magento Analytics in August for an undisclosed price.

Brock Weatherup, a serial entrepreneur and president of support group Philly Startup Leaders, shares in the optimism about Camden’s potential.

"Given the great growth momentum of Philadelphia in growing start-ups and early-stage businesses, it only seems natural to think that Camden can be an attractive point to expand the community,” Weatherup said. “Not taking away from Philly proper, but adding to it."

Adding to the bullishness about Camden’s start-up appeal is a belief that business opportunities will flow from some of the big companies moving to Camden’s waterfront, largely lured by hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks. Those include Holtec International, which plans to make nuclear reactors, and a new office tower that will house Conner Strong & Buckelew, an insurance company run by New Jersey Democratic powerhouse George Norcross.

A block from the Camden Co-Lab, Waterfront Lab had a soft opening on March 1. It currently has 17 companies, with room for three or four more, Tran said. All 12 offices are booked, at $850 a month. Dedicated desks cost $350 a month, open desks $225.

The two other co-working spaces he envisions would be within walking distance of Waterfront Lab to encourage a sense of community among the start-ups they serve and generate more foot traffic in a city where crime and decay do not instill pedestrian confidence.

Tran’s ultimate hope is that those who set up shop in the coworking spaces also will make their home in Camden, as he has.

Virtua to present plans for $1B Burlco campus

Quote:
Virtua is taking another step forward with its plans to build a $1 billion medical complex in Burlington County by presenting plans for the Westampton project at a public hearing before the state Department of Health Monday night.

The South Jersey health system's 20-year development plan for a 110-acre site between Routes 541 and 630 includes a nine-story replacement hospital for Memorial Hospital of Burlington County in Mount Holly.

In addition to its proposed 339-bed, 670,000-square-foot hospital, Virtua’s plans for the property also include a long-term care facility, a medical office building, an ambulatory surgery center, a hospice center, an assisted living facility and two parking structures. A health system spokeswoman said the hospital alone is expected to cost about $527 million, and will be funded through financing and Virtua’s existing equity.

Wilmington: Stitch House Brewery

https://outandaboutnow.com/the-more-the-merrier/

Quote:
Daniel Sheridan has picked up the baton and is running forward with a brewpub concept for 829 N. Market St.: Stitch House Brewery.

Sheridan’s name is fairly familiar around town—he’s an owner of Locale BBQ Post and Wilmington Pickling Company. And he’s no stranger to Market Street, having worked with chef Bryan Sikora at La Fia for nearly two years while planning Locale.

“It put me at ease about being on Market Street because I saw that he could bring in clients after downtown [office workers] cleared out,” Sheridan says. “We’re confident that with a nice brewery and a nice menu we can bring people downtown. Plus, with the Midtown Park project, we’ll have a parking garage right behind us and more apartments right behind us.”

Stitch House Brewery, which will have 90 to 100 seats, is named for the building’s former occupants, a tailor and a linen shop. (It’s also been a coal house and an icehouse.)

Sheridan, who hopes to open next spring, says to expect some barbecue; there will be a smoker on the premises. But barbecue isn’t the star. To cater to the lunchtime crowd, the menu will include paninis and sandwiches. Sheridan is also incorporating a fun factor: dishes prepared and served in mini cast iron skillets, such as dips, lasagna and warm vegetable salads with goat cheese.

NBC10-Telemundo62 site in Bala Cynwyd hits the market ahead of Center City move

Quote:
NBC10 and Telemundo62 are putting their 5.12-acre studio campus in Bala Cynwyd on the market as the broadcasters prepare to move into space at the Comcast Technology Center under construction in Center City, according to real estate services firm Binswanger, which is marketing the Montgomery County site.

The property at 10 Monument Road off City Avenue, which includes the Comcast Corp. subsidiaries’ 97,600-square-foot television studio, can accommodate higher structures than currently exist since the area’s recent rezoning, Philadelphia-based Binswanger Management Corp. said in a release on Thursday.

The Battle is heating up

The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce is against SB41.

http://www.phillymag.com/business/20...-sweeney-plan/

I can't hide my own alligence, I think the Chamber is an old dated dinosaur that is wrong. I truly believe Brandywine and other people who have a real vested interest in the city, and not building sprawl in Montco, are right.

As (R) John Taylor states:

Quote:
State Rep. John Taylor told City & State PA that the Chamber’s opposition to the bill is inconsequential. “They’ve never been for it. They said they were but they weren’t,” Taylor said. “But I don’t see it being stopped no matter who’s against it at this point. We’re looking at getting support from the statewide Chamber of Commerce. And our members will be reluctant to change their votes this season.” It might be another year before state lawmakers can get the bill signed into law.
Sorry to start this discuss but this issue crosses party lines both ways and imo shows who wants to get real reform done and who wants to sponsor more $5mn BS studies that come to the same conclusion, something needs to be done in terms of lowering both personal and business taxes in the city.

100+ new jobs on the way: Pa. Biotech Center to begin long-awaited $13M expansion

Quote:
The Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center of Bucks County is breaking ground Wednesday for its long-awaited $13 million expansion project.

The project will add 47,000-square feet of space — including 29 new laboratories — to the incubator and educational facility in Buckingham, Pa., which is home to dozens of life sciences startups. The new space will allow existing tenants at the center to grow their businesses, and also attract new tenants. An auditorium, cafeteria, rooftop deck and additional parking are also part of the expansion.

The project, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018, is expected to create more than 100 new science and biotechnology jobs in Bucks County and grow the footprint of the campus by 40 percent.
