Oh, and the 1/25 zoning board hearing schedule is online. Only thing of interest the construction of a new single-family house in Garfield. It's pretty far up the hill as well. Looks to be constructed by Module Housing, a new local firm. They apparently have a demo unit at Nova Place.

A new article by Forbes narrowing down the Amazon HQ2 to Detroit and Pittsburgh, then ultimately Pittsburgh.

Another article about the Esplanade development planned for Chateau. No renderings. Key details:

1. 15-acre development breaking ground in 2020
2. 700 units of housing (mix of condos, townhouses, and apartments) costing $500 million.
3. Another new hotel
4. Food/manufacturing incubators, a water taxi, and marina and kayak rentals
5. There may be a small museum on site.
6. About 300,000 square feet of office space is planned.
7. And of course the giant, climate-controlled Ferris wheel.

The developers are "hopeful" there will be an eventual T station, and that something can be done regarding the "Great Wall of 65" which limits pedestrian access to Chateau from Manchester.

A very cynical piece of garbage... but what can one expect from a Forbes op-ed written by a FreedomWorks mouthpiece? Hopefully Peduto, et al aren't foolish enough to blindly share this particular 'analysis' via social media.

The second bit here sounds interesting:

Two possibilities to accompany the storefronts could include a UPMC training center and a park memorializing four Pittsburgh Negro League baseball players.
I wonder where and what they have in mind for such a park.

That's all sounding very promising. And smart of them to focus on making this a complement to Manchester, which is an asset with a lot of potential for the City.

Yikes, that sounded much more like a libertarian diatribe than a thoughtful endorsement of Pittsburgh.

I do think Amazon might pick a place which has helpful branding. But not for political reasons, and Pittsburgh would be good because it already has that branding, not that it needs Amazon to get it.

And a bonus photo I took this afternoon of the Maxo Vanko murals in the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Millvale.
When I lived in Millvale I used to go to church here from time to time. Those murals are beautiful and that church is a hidden gem.

Drove past this the other day, it is fenced off getting ready for construction. This is right next to Trees Hall in Oakland.

I really like the historic theme they picked. Pittsburgh-specific without being a cliche.

I agree with this, not only is the glass making history of the area overlooked, I think it's pretty cool as well and something that while it obviously couldn't come back to what it was, it is certainly something that could be encouraged from a small business/arts perspective for this region.

Well, I don't know about all of you, but as a major league foodie, I can't wait for this one. Easily the most anticapated restaurant opening Pittsburgh will ever see. Big #7 sure is loyal to this town. Great guy!

Redevelopment may breathe new life into the South Side

http://www.post-gazette.com/business...s/201801090068

Developers Cedarcove Capital Ventures and Mazzarini Real Estate Group have plans to convert the seven-story building at 129 McKean St. into an artisan market, along with a riverfront craft whiskey distillery and a rooftop restaurant and entertainment venue.

The Distillery at South Shore, as the project is called, would serve as a bridge connecting two other large-scale redevelopments taking place on a riverfront stretch that always has been seen as a prime piece of real estate, yet has been slow to attract investment.

This is an aside, but I just found out that one of my wife's best friends is somehow now the chair of the Historic Review Commission!

I hope you are able to in some measure communicate the will of the SSP community.

I don't see her as frequently these days because she just had a baby, but I ran into her twice downtown over the past few weeks, as her son is temporarily going to the same day care as mine.

She's a talented architect, but I didn't think she was particularly politically well connected in local politics up until now.
