I think the roundabout is a great idea but they got the planning ass backwards ( typical for St. John's & NL in General) - it should have been completed before turning World Parkway into the main entrance to the airport last year.
Cougar's new building is nice tho!

Yeah, a bit strange to put it in after they made it the main entrance. It's possible they may have only decided to put it in afterwards but I highly doubt that. If so that's just more screwed up planning.

The new roundabout is like the others. If you take your time and be careful, you can navigate through it easily. Though most traffic is comin and going to the airport so at certain times it's a bit tense trying to go around it to get into Hoilday Inn Express.

The latest tender call is to satisfy the City's want for zero-run-off on new projects even though the TGH was sanctioned before the City instituted the new rule about zero run-off. The retention ponds I've seen so far are drownings waiting to happen.

I asked the city person about the "others" and she kept saying that's the Prov Gov't. She also said she thought that pavement would soon be started but that hardly seems likely this year since while the over/under passes at Old Pennywell and Redmonds are 'finished' the bypass roads are still in place and would have to be removed before any paving. Blackmarsh Rd overpass is still under construction and Blackmarsh Rd will be torn up from July-Oct, complicating access in that area.

It's unlikely that the Topsail Rd overpass will get done anytime soon since there's nowhere to go south of Topsail Rd (ie no roadbed after Brookfield Rd) and they need the inner overpass at Topsail Rd if they are to bring traffic to Topsail Rd and that'll be another full year of construction.

So my guess is that they'll finish the overpass at Blackmarsh and probably tender for the inner Topsail Rd overpass this year. They can't have traffic down Redmonds Rd until the round-about is done and there's no sign of any work on that this year.

So, unlikely that $ 23 M will get spent this year, perhaps $7 M for the inner Topsail Rd overpass and they'll take the rest in the fall budget for other things.
Drove along Blackmarsh Road today to see how things are progressing. Work "appears" to be mainly done as far as the water main. A lot of the Westbound lane is torn up though, hopefully it will will be repaved before the snow flies.
The overpass over the TGH is paved and again "appears" as though the diversion could be removed and the overpass put into use soon. Time will tell.

Drove the roundabout today, the Navigator ave enterance now has yield signs. I can only assume the uneven pavement means they'll be resurfacing Navigator ave some point in the near future.

Another permit for 65 Jetstream Avenue in this week's minutes (page 86: http://www.stjohns.ca/sites/default/...%2C%202016.pdf ). A four storey, 175 room hotel by Bird Construction ( http://www.bird.ca/Projects.html ). Same constructor that built the Canadian Forces' Paddon Building in Pleasantville.

Best Western Hotel is being built on Navigator Ave just behind the new Holiday Inn Express and next to the new Cougar Helicopter Terminal. I have also heard a rumour that Hyatt Regency is going down there too so perhaps thats what is going on 65 Jetstream Avenue. Holiday Inn Express also owns a couple of acres of land just west of its new Hotel facing on Portugal Cove Road that could possibly be a location for a stand alone restaurant if needed as there is no restaurant in the hotel.

Because I think that was an approval for a third hotel in that area.

National Airlines Ends YYT Service

National's flight to Orlando is over.

Looks like they have been struggling financially and hadn't paid $182,000 in fees to the airport. One of their planes got seized and then they just canceled the service basically...

Too bad another option is gone from our airport.

From CBC:
Quote:
National Airlines flight grounded by St. John's Airport Authority

Officials with the St. John's Airport Authority say a National Airlines flight is being kept on the ground under a court order because the Orlando, Fla.-based company owes a substantial amount of money to the airport.

...By Sunday afternoon, a notice on the airline's website stated: "We regret to inform you that we are cancelling several flights in November and December and have decided to not extend our service to St. John's beyond Jan. 6, 2017."
Story Here - CBCnews.ca

They did pay up after:
Quote:
National Airlines jet released after paying fees to St. John's Airport

The St. John's International Airport Authority says it received full payment of outstanding fees from National Air Cargo Group on Monday and has released the aircraft it seized last week.

National Airlines owed the airport authority nearly $182,000 in unpaid fees dating back to April, according to airport lawyer Meghan King.

I said from the beginning that I didn't think this service would last long.

Unfortunately it looks like it is very difficult for any airline other than Air Canada or WestJet to survive here. Porter just reduced their flights and United pulled out earlier this year.

Metrobus Changing Route 14, Connecting MUN To Airport

Quote:
Metrobus is making some major changes to route 14 starting in the new year.

As of January route 14, which will be wheelchair accessible, will be changed to provide service to and from St. John's International Airport.

The changes will link Memorial University, which is a major transfer hub, and the airport.

The changes will also bring the total number of wheelchair accessible routes to six.

Is there some collusion with taxi companies preventing this?

Paradise Metrobus route no longer in purgatory, pilot project extended

Quote:
Mayor says it makes sense to keep bus service after pilot project

Paradise has decided to continue a Metrobus pilot project that was slated to end this coming June.

The commuter route had 940 riders in a 20-day period, proving the ridership is already there, according to Mayor Dan Bobbett.

"The Metrobus has got great numbers already," he said. "[It] gets people to work in the morning, gets them home in the evening... So that's 940 car trips taken off the roads."

Pilot project announced 2016

Bobbett and St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe signed a memorandum of understanding last February to establish a one-year public transit pilot project in Paradise, running June 2016 to June 2017. The route runs five days a week.

Earlier this week, Paradise town council voted to continue funding a bus route from the community to St. John's for all of 2017.

Bobbett said more than 60 per cent of the cost of the Metrobus service to Paradise is subsidized by the town, but he believes it is money well spent.

"We're pleased with it. The ridership is there," said Bobbett. "It is subsidized, but it's a service for a community that offers an alternative that can take you to work or drop you off at the Avalon Mall."

Airport bus service

Metrobus has added stops at the St. John's International Airport to a route that travels between MUN and Airport Heights. Paradise's mayor believes there would be interest in expanding that to other parts of the northeast Avalon.

"I think that could be utilized by any area in the region," Bobbett said. "If you go to most cities they do have a bus route to the airport."

Blackmarsh Road

Anybody know what the hell is happening on Blackmarsh West?
They are still working and tearing up pieces of road previously filled.

Also the new overpass which was finished at summer's end, is still
barricaded, and no news of the anticipated roundabout at Redmond.

This must be the slowest place on the planet to get road work done.

They are just re-aligning some water main systems. They had Empire Avenue closed too recently for the same reason.

As for the overpasses, the budget was recently cut by government so work on the continuation of Gushue Highway is stalled yet again.

Yes, I realize that.

However the work I referred to is the so called "Blackmarsh underpass", which is completed and paved for months now, but not yet opened.

Actually the Budget had a $23 million entry for "continuance of Team Gushue Highway". The city forced the Gov't to spend a couple million on water run-off retention. That work was being done over the summer so that seems to be all that was done this construction season. Doubt they can spend the other $21 M this budget year. There's also been no work on the roundabout at Blackmarsh/Empire/Redmonds since the brush clearing last year. Perhaps the water work tearup on Blackmarsh caused them to delay the roundabout. The city said the Blackmarsh tearup would be completed well before now, but there seems to be more work in-progress.
