You really realize how small this planet is from an airplane. The fact that you can easily see the curvature of earth from the ground also show that (if earth was the size of Jupiter you probably wouldn't be able to see the curvature at all, thus be able to see the skylines from some crazy distances). Nice Vancouver pic, where was it taken from?

FWIW, on a clear night on top of Mount Washington NH, it's apparently possible to see the city glow from Montreal to the north and Boston to the south at the same time (no skyline though).........

That's a great picture! I was just in Montreal and Vermont that same weekend.

Would Mont-Royal be visible with the naked eye on the horizon?

Photo of Mt. Rainer taken from Grouse Mountain 297km/185mi away

The top of Mt. Rainer is visible from all locations that are shaded red on the following map; http://www.heywhatsthat.com/?view=EL5WI8PQ

Using the HeyWhatsThat website you can create custom maps showing how far away certain objects/points can be seen from.

Pure bs go to a lake with binoculars , when you see what you think is the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awCx5ob04ZYboat out of sight look thru them . Not advocating the flat earth but boats going over the curvature is pure myth

That video just seems to be on a day with particular atmospheric conditions blurring the horizon.

Wrong. Neither of these videos have mirages or haze obscuring anything.

The furthest pic he could find of MTL was from whiteface mountain, NY (129kms). Must have been taken with an extremely capable telephoto lens to be so crisp and zoomed in.

2nd furthest is from Mansfield (posted a few pages back). 3rd was from Fairfax, VT (shared by me a few pages back).

The furthest pic he found overall is jaw-dropping. Charlotte from Roan Mountain, taken 157kms away.

And I am still working on said informal project (it's a website, still under development, but kind-of usable at this point - The Viewshed).

Take a look if you like

That's a really neat site, great work! Very interesting to see how far some places really are.

I might have a photo of this, I'll see if I can dig it up

For now though, here's Victoria's skyline from Washington, 30 km to the south - https://old.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/...ungeness_spit/

It's too hazy here (I'd love to get a good photo sometime) but Fredericton's skyline is identifiable from Keswick Ridge, 18km away. Here all you can make out is the Mactaquac Dam stretching across the river, but on a good day there's a distinct cluster of buildings and the outline of the Cathedral and the Westmorland Street Bridge.

Driving through on the Trans-Canada, you barely get any idea at all that there's a whole city just to the north. This is a shame, as passers through used to get this view.

okay here's what I found :-)

the arrow isn't meant to point to Gabriola Island. there's a faint band of greenery just below the arrow which is Point Grey, and there's a white speck on it which would be the highrises at UBC

the distance here is 55 km

Montreal from Mt Kaaikop at 94 km. Didn't expect a view that deep into the Laurentians and would have missed it without the "View of Montreal" sign!
