That honestly isn't an unflattering photo, doesn't look like graffiti and despair all around.

No, graffiti requires some level of vibrancy and creativity.

My notes:

-Istanbul is a suprise to me.
-Dallas and Paris the same? Kinda funny if you think of them from a city-fabric comparison angle.
-No Shanghai is a suprise to me
-No Tokyo is a suprise to me
-& I'm pretty sure metro San Francisco is near the top of the list but obviously not by city boundaries.

How many individual Turks or Russians own shares or hold the debt of their country's major corporations? It's amazing the degree to which ownership of the wealth and profits of major industries are concentrated in such a small number of people in some of the newly industrializing economies.

Tokyo doesn't surprise me at all actually. There are only 22 billionaires in the whole country and I would assume you'll find many in Kanagawa (Yokohama and some super expensive Tokyo burbs). Japan just doesn't have the types of wealth disparity you see in Russia, Turkey or the US. Nor do you have a lot of Bill Gates / Zuckerberg Big Idea types who found start ups and get rich through stock. Japan doesn't have that type of entrepreneurial environment.

Chalk me up as surprised by Istanbul, Turkey and it's development really has been a dark horse to us here in the west.

Istanbul doesn't get any attention at all in the US. The situation with the Kurds and Cypress' economic collapse are barely mentioned out here. People are surprised to learn that Turkey is bigger than the UK and France and that Istanbul is such a dynamic city.

Surprising to hear that it'd rank that high, but not that it'd be on this list. Amazing city.

once you get into istanbul's local sphere of influence, it becomes visible that it is a pretty big deal. i'm going in early may, and can't wait to see the place.

in the balkans, you really feel the weight of istanbul, vienna, and zurich, in that order.

i always felt like kosovo looked a little towards italy, but that's probably influenced by the people i know and the fact that half the family moved to florence (and back) for work.

yeah, i know of some people with italy ties, but a lot more with germanic-europe ties. there are daily flights to vienna and zurich, but it's harder to get to milan or rome.

Turkey is an emerging powerhouse with a reach gradually going beyond its immediate sphere of influence. If the Eurozone fails and the EU fractures, I could see Ankara develop into a pretty important global city.

An interesting trend within the billionaire club in London is the displacement of the 'locals'; the majority of London's resident billionaires are likely to be Russian or Indian.

I am really surprised Port Moresby didn't make the list. Well, it is Phorbes.

I'm interested in how they count between London and Moscow... I would expect that a good chunk of Moscow's billionaires spend a lot of time here. Same with NYC but to a lesser extent.
