What exactly is the connection between Canada and South America? We're in the same hemisphere? We're both technically part of the same landmass? Do we even get many immigrants from South America, compared to places like east and south Asia? I don't really see the connection.

South America (Latin America I mean) might as well be on another planet.......
Yeah, maybe not so much Latin America, but Canada does have a connection to the West Indies region. The biggest Canadian cities have many citizens with English and French-speaking Caribbean roots such as Jamaicans, Trinis, and Haitians in Toronto and Montreal. Canadian banking and trade has had a strong presence in many Caribbean countries.

Even going back to the early 1800s, James Douglas, the "Father of British Columbia" was born in what is now Guyana, and had Bajan ancestry. (Guyana, though located in South America is sometimes grouped with the English-speaking West Indies because of its history).

There was also the well-known attempt to get the Turks and Caicos islands to join Canada, and though not taken particularly seriously, it was one of a line of proposals, some even going back to the late 1800s for British colonial territories in the region to form a union with Canada.
