Natural gas plant project (they call it an energy centre...). Just south of North Battleford. Odd to see a tower crane in an open field.

This is the new Northland baseload natural gas fired generating plant. 260MW. It is a significant project.

Town of Russell Regional Multiplex

Town of Russell's new multipurpose arena.

The Russell Regional Multiplex, like the Russell Memorial Arena, situated on Russell's Main Street, will continue to be the focal point of the community where people gather for recreation, to talk to their neighbors, to build a stronger community.

Careful planning has gone into designing a facility that meets the needs of user groups while staying within a realistic project budget. We are proud to acknowledge that our plan has been recognized by the Government of Canada and the Government of Manitoba through a $4 million contribution as part of the Building Canada fund. The job that lies ahead is raising the remaining Funds to see this project through to fruition.

Please see the full project summary and download a pledge form to assist us in reaching the community goals.

Stumbled across this just today. I lived in Humboldt until 2007 and always figured they needed more hotels. Now this.

Opened in 2010.

This, plus a new hospital, Canadian Tire store, high school, and more local development makes me want to get back to sleepy little Humboldt soon. Way to go.

This same hotel chain (Canalta) also opened up one of these puppies in Moosomin last fall. Amazing changes (positive) to that town since they twinned the trans canada highway in that area.

The town of Killarney MB is in negotiations with the same company to build a hotel there. I doubt that it will be nearly as large but it is sorely needed in that community. Since the Shamrock Centre was built there has been an increase in the number of major events (Manitoba Scotties), but with two run down motor hotels as the only accommodation there is a need for a new hotel.

Having stayed and spoken with the staff of this hotel chain, I understand that they are apparently building in areas that are already embedded in or are poised to have significant growth in the oil and gas field. I'm betting this is a big reason why they are now going to establish themselves in Southwestern Manitoba towns, along with Best Western and Ramada hotels, and would take this as a sign of the rapidly growing petroleum industry in Manitoba.

Looks similar to Days Inn in Steinbach exception being pool area.

edit.

I think this is a generic design.

Manitoba Sees Oil Boom

Manitoba Sees Oil Boom
Field's capacity greater than predicted: Chomiak

The hunt for oil and gas in Manitoba will reach a fevered pitch this year with a record $1 billion expected to be spent, the vast majority on drilling new wells, in the southwest corner of the province.

"We've got a mini-boom going on," said Dave Chomiak, minister of innovation, energy and mines. "If you look at a picture from out there, you'd figure you're in Alberta because there are miles and miles of oil pumps."

Island Lake plumbing plan touted

Local apprentices would retrofit houses in region's four First Nations, minister says

By: Larry Kusch
Posted: 03/24/2011 1:00 AM

Ottawa and the province appear poised to begin tackling the lack of sewer and water services in the Island Lake region.
There was no mention of it in Tuesday's federal budget, but provincial Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson said Ottawa is on board with a plan to train local apprentices to retrofit homes in the region's four First Nations.
"Ottawa and I are in agreement. The federal minister (John Duncan) and I are in agreement that we need to do this," Robinson said.
The two ministers spoke about the issue earlier this month. On Tuesday, Robinson wrote to the First Nations to inform them of the plan, encouraging them to pass band resolutions in support.
