Yuri,

Do you have data for Japan and Japanese Cities (GDP of metros)?

I'm curious where it ranks and the difference in % relative to the following:

Code:
NEW YORK ----------------- 1,828,524
LONDON ------------------- 1,140,864
LOS ANGELES -------------- 1,119,674
For Tokyo/Yokohama in this case.

Tokyo-Yokohama is 1st or 2nd. Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto is in the top 10 somewhere.

Chris, I didn't manage to find it. On Wikipedia, there are old figures from 2011. In the first page of the thread, I posted numbers for Japanese metro areas.

Good to see growth in almost every metro area with a GDP over 50 billion dollars. Looks like the oil price induced recession that hit back around 2014 in some of the oil patch metros has finally ended.

Bringing Europe now. Note its NUTS-2 based, which means wider metro areas definition:

Compared to the US, European areas fell a bit as the Euro had a slight fall against the Dollar. On the British areas, the decrease were more pronounced as the Pound was hit the hardest.

London with 20 million is absurd, esp. when same metric has Paris at 12 million.

But Milan at 10 million is the craziest.

It looks like the population of all of Lombardy, with an area of 24,000 km^2....

For comparison, this comes out to 23,000 km^2

It's not that. It's London plus the five bordering NUTS-2. The whole Southampton area is out as it has its own NUTS-2 region.

It's NUTS-2 based. Milan metro area is pretty much 80% of Lombardia province. Ditto for London. There's nothing too shocking about the two. In fact, it might be more strict than US CSAs.

London and Paris are the same size, so if you're using a metric showing one with twice the population of the other, your metric is flawed.

And if Milan is bigger than Chicago or Hong Kong and almost as big as Paris or Buenos Aires, then, again, your metric is flawed. Milan is hardly a megacity; it would be comparable to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Rome, Vienna and the like.

It also means your Milan metro has a bigger geography than the LA metro, which is absurd. Obviously American metros are the sprawliest on earth, and Italian metros are quite compact.

If I added Oise to Paris, I would make it 3x larger to add 1 million people only. I preferred to work with broader definitions to make it more comparable with US CSAs, aside it makes more sense as GDP has many distortions when counting the entire region.

Milan metro area ranges from 7 million to 8 million, which is pretty much the entire Lombardia. Just look at the map: its sprawl takes over the entire province. You have Milan city proper in mind, that's why you struggle to those numbers.

And I didn't understand your comparison with Los Angeles. Milan/Lombardia has 23,000 km²; Los Angeles CSA: 87,000 km².

In any case, that's just a reference. For the US, I have CSAs available (in fact, MSAs only and I add them up to make CSAs); for Brazil I also use a broader definition based on microrregions instead of municipalities, to make the list clean and more comparable with US. For México, I use DF+Mexico+Morelos for Mexico metro area and Nuevo Leon for Monterrey and so on. Everywhere I chose broader definitions.

LA metro is only 12,562km². The CSA land area number for LA includes up to ~60,000km² of uninhabited Sonoran Desert and mountains. It just so happens that Riverside and San Bernardino counties that are included in the CSA extend all the way to the Nevada/Arizona border since the land in-between is uninhabited. Sonoran Desert is larger than Great Britain in land area.
