Pink's Hot Dogs Come to LAX

By Art Marroquin, Staff Writer
July 22, 2010

The distinctive snap of a hot dog casing enveloped by soft, fresh buns and topped with spicy chili drew dozens of foodies Thursday to Los Angeles International Airport.

The unmistakable taste of Pink's Hot Dogs have tantalized the taste buds of Southern California residents and tourists for more than seven decades.

And now, overseas travelers can take a bite of local culinary culture when passing through LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal, where Pink's Hot Dogs has opened its eighth stand since the eatery was established in 1939. It's the first Pink's in an airport.

"Our tour guide told us about Pink's hot dogs and that they are the most famous in L.A., so I decided to try it," Marianne Beeler said after ordering a mild polish dog and a side of french fries during a stopover between Honolulu and her home country of Switzerland.

"I guess it's one of those tourist things," Beeler said. "You know, one of those things you have to do while you're in L.A."

Fans of the landmark eatery don't need a plane ticket to order their favorite hot dog at the airport. Pink's Hot Dogs sits in a food court that's accessible before visitors reach the security checkpoint.

Anxious diners stood in a long line Thursday afternoon to get a taste of the renowned hot dogs. The scene resembled the throngs of fans who wait in front of the original Pink's Hot Dogs stand at LaBrea and Melrose avenues in Hollywood.

"When my parents started Pink's in 1939, they never dreamed they would be opening a hot dog stand at the greatest airport in the world, LAX," said Richard Pink, who now runs the family business.

"The whole idea of Pink's was to bring a bit of Hollywood to the airport, a bit of nostalgia," Pink said. "I think anybody that comes here is going to taste the same great hot dogs that they taste at our other store in Hollywood."

Among the menu's offerings is an "LAX International Dog," which was selected last November by the city's top dog, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The winning entry was submitted by airport employee Timothy Ihle, whose 10-inch hot dog was topped with chili, sauerkraut, bacon, shredded cheese and chopped tomatoes.

"The best things on a hot dog are either chili or sauerkraut, so I just put them together and added the other ingredients for a really good sandwich," Ihle said as he bit into his masterpiece.

"It's a really good mix," he said. "It was really cool to order something I created right off the menu."

Magaly Grimaitre had never heard of Pink's Hot Dogs, but ordered an LAX International Dog on Thursday while waiting for a flight back home to Switzerland.

"We just wanted something very American before we go home, so we decided to order a hot dog before getting on the plane," Grimaitre said after ordering.

A taste of Southern California - particularly Los Angeles - is just what city and airport officials are seeking in the latest round of food and beverage contracts under consideration for four terminals at LAX.

Pink's Hot Dogs was brought to LAX by Delaware North Cos., which was offered a proposed contract that also calls for new restaurants operated by celebrity chefs Masaharu Morimoto and Wolfgang Puck sometime next year. That deal, along with four other food contracts, is undergoing an intensive review this summer by a five-member City Council committee.

The Pink family and Delaware North on Thursday also donated $10,000 to the Greater Los Angeles USO, which provides meals, phones and Internet services to thousands of servicemen and women who pass through LAX on their way to military bases scattered across the globe.

"Pink's is a Los Angeles legacy," said David Shuter, a deputy executive director at LAX.

"What we've been trying to do is bring more of the L.A. taste into the airport," Shuter said. "And boy, after 71 years, if you don't have the L.A. taste by that time, you'll never have it."

Fentress Architects to Design LAX’s Domestic Terminal Makeover Scheme

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California has appointed Colorado-based Fentress Architects to draw designs for its domestic terminals as part of the terminal renovation scheme.

July 21, 2010

The exterior of Los Angeles International Airport’s domestic terminals will get extensive makeover as a result of a $31.4 million contract extension approved by the airport commission. Fentress Architects will draw designs for the domestic terminals, which have not received any major upgrades since they were built during the 1960s.

Under the design contract, Fentress should determine the areas of the Bradley terminal which has to be demolished as part of the structure’s ongoing $1.5 billion expansion project. The firm will also design a set of secure corridors that will link the new Bradley West terminal with Terminals 3 and 4.

The contract with Fentress now totals more than $124 million and is set to expire in May 2015. In 2008 the firm unveiled designs for the revamped Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).

Alaska's Move to Terminal 6 to Begin Revamp of LAX Domestic Terminals

By Art Marroquin, Staff Writer
August 9, 2010

Long-awaited work on domestic facilities at Los Angeles International Airport will finally begin this year as Alaska Airlines prepares to move into Terminal 6, officials said Monday.

With preliminary costs of $200 million, the terminal renovation calls for additional airline gates, more security lanes, and a new baggage screening system, said Ed White, vice president of corporate real estate for Alaska Airlines.

When completed, Terminal 6 would be able to accommodate Alaska Airlines' domestic and international flights, White told the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners.

The project, set for completion in early 2012, will be funded by Alaska Airlines, LAX and the Transportation Security Administration, airport officials said.

"It's a tired terminal," White said. "It not only needs to be opened up, but also needs to be spruced up in the entire customer area."

Renderings show the terminal bathed in ice blue lights and walls accented with wood paneling. The terminal's ticketing lobby and baggage claim areas also will be roomier.

Alaska Airlines has shown interest in moving into Terminal 6 for about three years, but a "convoluted set of leases" with other airlines housed inside the building kept that from happening, said Steve Martin, chief operating officer for LAX.

A series of deals in recent months have cleared the path, allowing Alaska Airlines to move in, Martin said.

In a separate matter, airport officials are preparing for the next round of bids for dining and retail contracts at LAX, even though the current set of proposals remains mired in controversy.

Officials hope to issue a call for bids by December for companies interested in operating shops and eateries inside Terminals 1, 2, 3, 6 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Consideration of all bids won't happen until sometime in 2011, even though the airport's current set of concession contracts expires at the end of this year.

The delay could hamper completion of the ongoing Bradley terminal expansion project, which requires that new concession operators participate in the building's design and construction process.

While the "paramount objective" is finding concessionaires for the Bradley terminal, the bids will not be split from Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 6, said Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of LAX.

The move comes as the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office reviews the airport's bidding process for five proposed dining contracts spread across Terminals 4, 5, 7 and 8.

Airport officials had hoped those contracts would be approved by the start of summer, but one of the losing bidders has alleged a conflict of interest in the selection process. The proposed deals could be tossed aside if the City Attorney's Office finds any wrongdoing.

"While we've tried to be patient on the award of contracts for Terminals 4, 5, 7 and 8, I think we need to move on," Lindsey told the airport commission.

How exciting! It looks like overtime, LAX will be remodeled almost completely from the inside out. With the theme building as an international landmark, we may have one of the best airports in the country when all renovations are done.

BTW, where are the renderings of the new Terminal 6/Alaska?

^ There's still quite a ways to go before LAX could even be considered a decent airport. But yes, slowly but surely the airport is evolving.

A tour of Terminal 6 in case you don't know what it looks like. It's pretty shitty:

The TBIT renovation program was completed earlier this year. I really like what they've done to the arrivals level. It looks very Euro.

^ Thanks a bunch. I still think the biggest issue with LAX's terminals is the utter lack of space, considering it's such a busy airport. But the new cosmetic upgrades should brighten up the place and make it feel not as cramped and dingy.

I can't wait to see what Fentress does to the exteriors of these domestic terminals, which are just as butt ugly as their interiors.

Whats the point of a 200 million renovation just as you announce it will be redesigned again in a few years.

Why is it that one side is shorter than the other?

^ The north concourse is shorter because of the Interim West Busing Terminal (IWBT). Whether or not it will be replaced with more gates depends on the decision regarding the runways on the north airfield.

I've been thinking about this project a lot lately. To get a taste of what we can expect, we only need to look at the firm's previous work. Look for Bradley West to be a cross between what was done in Raleigh and San Jose, especially the latter. Overall, a very solid design.

Raleigh's spacious layout and curvilinear roofs:

San Jose's skin and curtain wall as well as a similar color scheme:

Now complement those design elements with tastefully designed carpeting, non-busy terrazzo flooring, and some nice glass. I want it to look like this:

Proposed South Bay Transit Center Near LAX Gets $1.45M Grant

By Nick Green, Staff Writer
August 25, 2010

A proposed South Bay transit center near Los Angeles International Airport has received a $1.45 million federal grant, officials said Wednesday.

The money, which requires a 20 percent local match, will be used in the second phase of a three-phase project to design the station at Aviation and Century boulevards, said Roderick Diaz, the project manager with the county's Metropolitan Transit Authority.

That phase, which moves the project from the conceptual stage it's now in to a preliminary engineering phase, will begin this fall and last about a year.

The total cost to design what's called an Intermodal Transit Center is $11 million, Diaz said. The transit center will be the connecting hub for two light rail lines - the Green Line and the Crenshaw/LAX Line - buses and a "people mover" to take people into the airport.

Construction on the $1.7 billion transit center is tentatively scheduled to occur between 2012 and 2018, Diaz said.

"This grant certainly helps us meet those targets," he said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation grant was announced by Rep. Jane Harman, D-El Segundo.

"The grant is great news for the South Bay, which is finally on its way to being connected by rail to LAX," she said.
