If they're going to build it around waiting for this Republican legislature to do the right thing, they may be literally waiting another decade. I'm hoping that they'll finally pass the RTA, this or next month, but that's a crap shoot. I think M-1 needs to build this demonstration to finally put to rest the doubts and derision of our "betters" who don't seem to know the first thing about transit apart from the automobile.

Is M-1 paying for the new multimodal station at New Center?

Check out Seattle's Link light rail line in Google Earth along MLK. There are several stations along the route in the center median.

Yeah. It would work just like the hundreds of other median running light rail lines around the world.

Step 1. Wait for walk sign.

Step 2. Cross one way traffic at intersection

Step 3. Walk into/onto station platform.

Step 4. Wait for train

Step 5. Get on train

(Disembarking occurs in reverse of these steps)

No! They'll be paying for the streetcar tracks and streetcar platforms; what they need to operate, and imho that's enough.

Not mass transit related, but I saw in a few flickr photo streams, the state of Michigan is demolishing the Pier 19 approach spans that appeared in 2009 at the Ambassador bridge. At one time, these approach ramps would connect to a cable stayed structure. That will not happen. For once something NOT being built in Detroit is great news.

Yeah, but the bridge troll literally announced a few days ago his drive to get the publically-developed Detroit River International Crossing proposal down in Delray on the ballot for a vote...all the while still running millions of dollars of commercials so deceptive that they should be illegal. It's going to be hard even for him to get it on the ballot, but it just shows how incredibly petty he is. I've been waiting for Snyder to just say "'eff it" and started the damned thing, already. This has gone on long enough.

Wait, so the bridge stub is a relic of an earlier proposal, and now the proposed bridge has shifted to Delray?

The Canadian approach road is an engineer's wet dream... tell me the Canadian government is not considering something of this magnitude.

Matty Maroun illegally built Pier 19 in anticipation that he would construct a second privately-owned bridge to Canada. Neither the Michigan nor the Canadian governments will ever allow that to happen. The Canadians don't want the additional surface street traffic in Windsor, and MDOT has been in a very long legal battle with Maroun's company because Maroun's construction of Pier 19 violated a contract he had with MDOT to connect the Ambassador bridge approach directly to I-75.

The proposed bridge in Delray is a separate project, and will be publicly funded and operated. The Canadian government has agreed to pay the entire up-front cost of construction. Michigan's half of the bill will be paid by future toll revenues. This hasn't prevented Matty Maroun from waging an all-out propaganda war in an attempt to convince Detroiters that the bridge is unnecessary and will cost taxpayers millions. He's a complete and total scumbag.

Does every thread about mass transit in Detroit have to turn into a anti or pro Ambassador Bridge argument?

Nobody's arguing pro.

Besides, the last few pages have been filled with discussions of M-1 and commuter rail. The Ambassador Bridge is just one more important transportation issue for Detroit, and for the nation (Detroit is the busiest crossing on the whole US-Canada border). Plus, a piece of real news was posted.

Good to see Chrysler starting to put their money where their mouth is. You can't claim Detroit street cred if you're sitting in a cushy Auburn Hills office.

Streetcars desired: M1 Rail hopes to hop on Cincinnati's order
Quote:
The Motor City is looking to the Queen City when it comes to downtown streetcars.

.....
M1 Rail, the private consortium of investors seeking to build a $137 million, 3.3-mile modern streetcar line on downtown Detroit's Woodward Avenue between Hart Plaza and New Center, told the U.S. Department of Transportation in a recent report that it's in talks with the city of Cincinnati about possibly piggybacking its streetcar order.

M1 is looking at both off-the-shelf purchase of six streetcars or attaching its vehicle needs to another system's order, which is a common practice in the transit industry because it can reduce turnaround time and cost.

SEMCOG's commuter rail proposal between Ann Arbor is one step closer to reality. From SEMCOG's most recent monthly update (May):

Quote:
If you’re out and about in Shiawassee County the week of May 7-11, don’t be surprised if you notice a line of MiTrain passenger rail cars chugging down the tracks. What you’ll be witnessing is continued progress by SEMCOG and MDOT toward commuter rail service in the Ann Arbor to Detroit Corridor. The cars are nearing the final stages of testing before they can be used in service. Testing thus far has shown the refurbished cars meet the rigorous requirements of the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak. As a next step, the in-motion testing next week is being conducted by the Great Lakes Central Railroad (GLC) to assure that the cars will provide a safe and comfortable ride for Southeast Michigan’s residents, business representatives, and visitors. The final set of tests will be run by Amtrak on the Ann Arbor to Detroit corridor itself in the coming months.

These are former Chicago Metra cars, refurbished by the Great Lakes Central Railroad, being tested for future commuter rail service in the Ann Arbor-Detroit and Howell to Ann Arbor corridors. The first use of these cars will occur in late 2012 or 2013 to access special events in the Detroit and Ann Arbor areas.

Detroit Bus Cuts: Community Files Civil Rights Complaint With Justice Department

Detroit Bus Cuts: Community Coalition Files Civil Rights Complaint With Justice Department

05/09/2012

By David Sands

Read More: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1502884.html

Quote:
A transit advocacy group announced Wednesday it will file a Title VI Civil Rights complaint against the Detroit Department of Transportation, alleging recent bus cuts came without proper notice or public hearings. Severely short on funds, DDOT recently eliminated nighttime bus service from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. and cut service hours on 34 weekday routes and 29 weekend routes in favor of boosting service on four key routes. The North End Woodward Community Coalition says DDOT violated federal regulations for public input at public hearings over the two rounds of service cuts.

The group alleges DDOT "failed its federal mandate to get meaningful public input before making cuts to service" and "to provide an alternative to mitigate the impact of the cuts on minority and low income populations, many of who rely solely on the bus for to get to work and school." Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin by recipients of federal funds. Violations are filed with the U.S. Department of Justice. DDOT is seeking more than $2.4 million in federal transportation funding for the 2012 fiscal year. That means the department must hold hearings to comply with laws governing service changes. But the coalition claims hearings on the recent service changes were scheduled in a manner that made it difficult for members of the public to attend and that translation services were not provided. The department held public hearings on Feb. 24 on cuts to overnight service and other route changes and on April 5 on revisions to scheduled bus times.

Nope. And, this is mostly because Wally is a much less ambitious project that doesn't call for nearly the improvement of infrastructure on its line that the SEMCOG proposal has on its line. Wally is also more of a dream until a regional authority gets up and running; SEMCOG has been pushing on on its line regardless of this. Wally is proposed to terminate on Plymouth Road north of the river. Pretty dumb, huh?

But, maybe, if the RTA legislation every passes, Wally will get an upgrade. I mean, it doesn't make sense not to get it south of the river.

SEMCOG has a new update:
June 2012 update

Low speed testing is complete and high speed testing will be conducted in July. The July tests should be the last ones and the cars should be ready. It also states that Mitrain would be capable of starting special event services late 2012 or early 2013. Could we see special service to the last Michigan home game on Nov. 17th, that would be fantastic. Wish there was some video of the slow tests.

Well, looks like however far Wally is from it's implementation, it keeps slowly building up funds to keep moving it foward. Apparently, Wally won $640,000 from the DOT Federal Highway Administration the other day to be put towards engineering and station design for the commuter line.
