One thing I've been wondering about lately is do tower cranes have a set regulation on how much clearance they have to have above the building they're working on? It seems like they usually clear the top of a building by at least 40 feet. But there's a tower crane working on a building in Austin right now that is clearing it by like 90 feet because there's another building under construction across the street, and I guess they have to clear that crane. But I was wondering if they have a minimum clearance requirement.
I was on a job building a 14 story building, by the time we had put on the roof it was real close to the crane. I got a 5 step ladder, put it on the roof and greased the jib from the ladder instead of climbing 50 meters straight up. Always had to slew around the building even with empty chains. You can see the height difference in the 4th pic down, unfortunatly picture does not do complete justice, gap between jib and roof is only a couple of meters.

Here is a sequence of photos taken from the tower crane at The Austonian in Austin. The top of the crane was around 740 feet up I would guess.

There are more photos of the crane in the link below.

Tower crane erection time lapse.

The great stills in this forum prompted me to do an upload...time lapse of a tower crane erection, if the link to youtube works (!) it will bring you to a 6 frame per second video.

Thank you TMA-1, quite the time lapse, very illustrative of the process, and shows how the tower can be used as a sundial ;-)

435 N Clark - AMLII -crane coming down.

Here's Looking at you

5/7

5/10

Bracket parts - the collar that attaches it to the building

They use this weight to free 2 of the sides of the tower section being removed - w/o the weight it settles back on these and the other 2 can be freed up.

^I saw that on the news here. Pretty crazy.

I took these on July 5th and 6th this summer.

Stringing the suspension cables for the boom.

Attaching the cables.

Suspension cables attached.

Can you guess what this piece is?

It's the car the hook rides on.

The boom waiting to go up.

They got my hopes up when they started hooking it up, but they were only lifting it over the fence for the night.

After I saw this I knew they were done for the day.

My name is Peter Hanson. I am a member of a small band of curriculum developers at Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. We are small a publically-funded college located in a region that has been undergoing a sustained oil industry construction boom for 10+ years.
One of the projects I am currently working on is the curriculum for the college's new Tower Crane Operator Apprenticeship Program. I would like permission to use some of your wonderful images in our curriculum package. I cannot offer you financial compensation, but each image would be credited to you.
Your images are of such high resolution, we could crop in to show our future tower crane operators specific components.
Thanks for your consideration of this mater, I look forward to hearing from you.
