My guess, and it's just a guess, is that it's a Simca (French).

from Suzanne G. on Yelp.

The Monastery gave their recipe to the LA Times back in the 1970's and I've been making it ever since.
I still have the newspaper clipping on my inside kitchen cabinet because I make it so often. Here's the original recipe:

Monastery of the Angels Pumpkin Bread:

Preheat over to 350 degrees

3 1/2 cups flour
3 cups sugar
2 teas. baking soda
1 teas. cinnamon
1 teas. ground nutmeg
1 1/2 teas. salt
4 eggs beaten (I use Jumbo)
1 cup veg. oil
2/3 cup water
2 cups pure canned pumpkin (I use Libby's)
1 cup walnuts (optional)
1 cup golden raisins (optional)

Mix eggs, oil, water and pumpkin & set aside.
Mix all dry ingredients

Add dry mixture to wet ingredients a cup at a time until smooth with either a whisk or mixer.

This will make (3) 5X9 loaves.

__
Is it me or does this recipe seem a bit heavy on the sugar? I'd eliminate
one cup of sugar.... at the least.

I think I know where today's Julius Shulman picture was taken, but I'm a little confused by the date. I'll explain below. This is "Job 368: Gus May Men's Shop, 1948".

Getty Research Institute

I found Guy S May's men's furnishings shop at 523 S Olive Street in the CDs of the 1920s and 1930s. That's in the Biltmore Hotel. Here's a tie which confirms the location.

www.preloved.co.uk

The Shulman picture seems to match the Biltmore Hotel (see below), but by 1942 there's a different men's furnishing company owned/named after Edward Wedekind Jr at 523 S Olive. The 1956 CD (the first after the date of the Shulman photo) shows Eddy Harth men's clothing at that address. Does this cast doubt on the dating of the Shulman photo, or did Guy S May return to the Biltmore in 1948? The numbering must have changed over the years, as this is the only part of the Biltmore's frontage that matches the original picture. Incidentally, 523 S Olive was also the address of St Paul's Cathedral which preceded the Biltmore.

I think you're right. And as an aside, now you know why the Volvo owner's club in the SF Bay Area called themselves "The 1940 Ford Restorers Association:"

The photograph was taken outside Googie's in the corner of the San Carlos Hotel - part of the fascia can be seen in the top right corner.
For comparison, here's a picture of Googie's restaurant originally posted by CityBoyDoug in post #20764.

I think the windows of the brown car on the left in the first picture are reflecting Googie's red neon sign.
The night shot below is from a season 1 (1974) episode of 'The Rockford Files'.

Was trying to find some late 40's hotel photos to discover this discrepancy, but no luck yet!

I wanted to comment on that tie, though. That particular one strikes me as really ugly. (Just me?) I do notice that the ties in the Julius photo in the window on the left have that same half circle design flourish as the other tie, only reversed. Perhaps Gus liked that design style for his ties. I like it, too, just not that one particular tie!

Thanks for looking, Martin Pal. I found a couple of pictures of the florist and coffee shop nearer to W 5th Street, but no close-ups of the Guy S May end.

----------------

This is the cleaning business built by Abe Butler at 5905 Van Nuys Boulevard towards the end of 1946. It's Julius Shulman's "Job 124: Butler's Cleaners, 1947". NB. There's another photo in the set, but it's almost identical.

Getty Research Institute

I was hoping that this one might still be standing, but no such luck. It was demolished in 1971, by which time it was being used as a repair garage.

Online Building Records

I can't even show you the building that replaced it, because that was demolished around 2005. Today you'll just find the front lot of a Lexus dealer there.

I found this USC snapshot a few months ago on eBay. There wasn't any information with it, but it's quite interesting none-the-less.

University of Southern California 'D' 1912. (not sure what the 'D' stands for)

If you look closely, you can see the letters ST in the window. (could the word be Dentist?)

detail

So perhaps the D on the over-sized cloth pennant stands for Dental school.

There might be an I in front of the S and T.

Two amateur slides of the newly constructed Los Angeles Sports Arena, 1959.

eBay

Are those homes?

While I'm at it, here are a couple more images.

Here's the Sports Arena, about 80% complete, on the day it was officially selected as the site for the 1960 Democratic National Convention.
(the convention that nominated J.F.K.)

Any idea what the name of that drive-in is?

Aerial view shows two major centers of interest, the Memorial Coliseum (left) and the Memorial Sports Arena (center); view is looking northwest.
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located at 3911 S. Figueroa Street, was officially opened on May 1, 1923. The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, located at 3939 S. Figueroa,
was officially opened on July 4, 1959. Figueroa Street can be seen from bottom left corner to middle right; the Harbor (110) Freeway runs across bottom right corner; Martin Luther
King Jr. Boulevard is seen from middle left to bottom right corner. Photograph taken for Pioneer Flint Kote. Photograph dated June 12, 1959.

From a collection entitled "Los Angeles Track Club - 1963." Aside from establishing the Sports Arena's ability to host a televised international indoor track meet, and depicting hopeful competitors for the '64 Tokyo Games, there are some random shots of team members training on the streets and practice field, some of which (the streets and field) NLA'ers may recognize. Probably a number of well known sports personalities too. http://images.google.com/hosted/life...0e5a03476.html
