Does anyone know where in Hollywood this gas station was located?
That photo seems to originate from LAPL. Here's their other view of Howe's Super Station in Hollywood. This photo is also dated October 31, 1930.

Here's the service station's listing at 7456 Melrose Avenue in the 1932 CD. They're at the same address in the 1930 CD, but the listing is just a single line.

That looks like a pretty good view.

All from Getty Research Institute

The house still stands at 804 Gatos Place. You can read more about it at laconservancy.org.

Here's a close-up of the roof windows.

I'll finish with an interior shot.

All from www.archp.com
Never saw this interesting Lloyd Wright house before. But as usual with son-of-Wright..."Something added and something missing." The father would never have added those bizarre dormer windows....omg no!

I found this old sepia photograph in a file of mine several days ago. (I've checked, and I'm pretty sure it's new to NLA)

personal file

I've been trying to figure out if the float is a facsimile of Mt. Lowe railroad?

Here's a closer look.

detail

If only we could read what's written at the base of the float.

While trying to find more information on this sepia pic I happened upon another Mt. Lowe float that Flyingwedge posted over three years ago.

I thought it wouldn't hurt to see it again. (it's such a great photograph!) -I wonder what the guy dressed as a bandit is representing?

But what about my sepia photograph? Is that a Mt. Lowe float as well?

And what about the location....is anyone familiar with that brass foundry?

Photo # 2 looks like the same as #1 just a different angle. Look at the Spanish style building in the background, it looks the same. .

I found these two interesting slides quite by accident while looking through 'Google images'.

http://lynwoodhs63.com/lynwood-golden-years/

Lynwood Bowling Center (no address)

below: Lynwood Press (& Tribune) -no address.

Google images says they're from here http://lynwoodhs63.com/lynwood-golden-years/

But when I go to the site I can't find them. (I thought I'd post them anyway)

Does anyone know where in Lynwood they were located?

And here's another slide from that same site.

http://lynwoodhs63.com/lynwood-golden-years/

But I have the location for this one! (see below)

detail

Has anyone heard of 'Defrosto'?

Also note the owner's name...Ted Pridsman. (his last name is a bit hard to read but I think 'Pridsman' is correct)

Here's Alameda and 112th St. today ( the 'Defrosto' building on the corner is gone, but I believe the other buildings are still there)

-you can see the water tower just above the trees.

gsv

Here are the two buildings a bit further down Alameda.

detail

And here they are today.

gsv

Here's a closer look at the middle building, the B & F Machine Co. (I left this one for last because I'm not sure it's the same building)

Here's the building that's there now.

gsv

Let me know what you think. Is this the same building?

I like the float with the miniature Incline Rail cars apparently going up and down the hill......cute.
Probably have two guys inside the hill with ropes....pulling the cars.

It must be Mt. Lowe since the cars with the three different levels match those that went up to Echo Mountain House

The only Brass Foundry I'm familiar with would be the Columbia Brass Foundry:

odinthor collection

Once upon a time, I looked into the matter and found some addresses (717 N. Main Street, 810 N. Main, 688 Rio Street); but I ran out of time, forgot about it, and never finished my researches. Perhaps the brick foundry in your pic is at one of these locations...?

I found black & white versions of both photos in a book called 'Lynwood' by the City of Lynwood with Ilu Johnson and Chris Diaz. Firstly, the Lynwood Bowling Center was on Imperial Highway.

books.google.com

The building's still there. I think the address is 3351 Imperial Highway.

GSV

Here's the Lynwood Press and Tribune building on Mulford Avenue.

books.google.com

I can't find Plaza Street or the old city hall. Could this be the old building? Mulford Avenue is quite a short street, and most of it's residential. This is at the western end. Looking again, I think this is a different building.

GSV

Opposite the building above is the Hotel Lynwood.

If we're eliminating brass foundries, I don't think the one in e_r's picture is this one on the corner of Aliso and Garcia Streets in 1899.

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

Here are a few more who took out large adverts in the early CDs. I haven't checked out the addresses.

First, H H Conklin Iron and Brass Foundry from 1886-1887.

Moving on a few years, this is the advert for the Mann & Johnson Machine Works and Brass Foundry from 1898.

I'll finish with the Acme Brass Foundry Company, Inc from 1914.

All from LAPL

There are many other foundries listed - it may take a while to sort through them if anyone fancies it.

Thanks for your research on the foundries HossC & odinthor.

I'm curious, did Pasadena have any foundries back in the day?

Perhaps the Mt. Lowe float (in the sepia pic) was in the Rose Parade. (just a thought)--as opposed to the La Fiesta parade.

We're back to retail for today's Julius Shulman post. This is "Job 531: Rowland H. Crawford, Sears, Roebuck and Company (Santa Monica, Calif.), 1949". I'm not sure why they put the kiosk on the ledge!

Getty Research Institute

Here's the store in an aerial from the 1955 blimp series which I've used many times before. It looks like it would have been highly visible from the nearby intersection.

Detail of picture in USC Digital Library

This is roughly the same view today. As you can see, the store is still there, but the road layout has changed over the years.

Google Maps

Finally, a ground-level view of the store at 302 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica. At least they've got the kiosk in the right place now .

Hoss, I've stared at this 1955 aerial for quite awhile.

For the life of me I can't figure out what this is (circled below)....it almost looks like a church(?)

usc

close-up / lightened a bit.

detail

Whatever it is, it's throwing a pretty large shadow onto the street.

Here's a reverse view from the same photoset. I think the mystery building is just a collection of billboards (they're right in front of Sears from this angle).

And while we're in the area.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/dyingi...n/photostream/

So what was Sinbad's?

Here's a photo I found from 1988. The building looks really old!

https://www.architecture.com/image-l...RIBA33274.html

look at all the old photographs on the wall under the trellis. (that whole section blocks off the front of the building)
__

Ok, I just found this matchbook, so now I know it was a restaurant w/ cocktails.

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...7d7b9912d9.jpg

So where was Sinbad's located? I've placed an arrow above the former Holiday Inn (the Holiday Inn is visible in the sepia newspaper photo at the top of the post)

google_aerial

I'm curious, has anyone here on NLA ever been to Sinbad's?

I a bit embarrassed to say, but I never made it out to Santa Monica Pier when I lived in L.A. (I guess I thought it was too touristy....or something )

Is it my imagination, or am I seeing an address on the foundry building? I enlarged it and played with contrast/sharpening a little:

148? 118? Looks like a three-digit number ending with 8. I could ask the guy in the pic, but he didn't give me his phone number.

I'm also hoping for some good stories!

Here's a wider view showing Sinbad's.
