House destroyed, possibly around 1988." The property websites, on the other hand, still give a build date of 1947. You can't see the house from the street due to the high hedges, so I had to get an aerial view. It's obviously different from the first Shulman picture, but has roughly the same proportions, so maybe "heavily modified" is more accurate than "destroyed". Does anyone know any more details?

Google Maps via supercharge.info
I couldn't find any additional information, but I'm almost sure it's the same house.
It can't just be coincidence that the "new" house has that same, almost pyramidal shape.

it appears the fireplace has been moved from center-left to the front of the house. (and they added a second story to the garage)

Man, moving that fireplace from one side of the room to the other must have been an exercise. I wonder why they did that? Some rearrangement of the second floor?

Cheers,

Earl

"Original negative, Toluca Yards 1941." -rare

eBay (found several months ago)

Any idea what this wooden structure is with all the bracing and supports?

detail

At first glance I thought it was a water tank, but now I'm not so sure.

The photograph shows the formwork for the concrete supports of the bridge that will carry Beverly Blvd/1st Street over Glendale Blvd.

There was another commercial I loved as a kid (from around 1966/67) It was set to a hollywoodized 'Indian' drumbeat.

I'm curious to see how many of you remember this one.

Yes, I know......the commercial is for beer, but I just absolutely loved the animated bear and drumbeat.
I even asked my parents if we could go to "The Land of Sky Blue Waters" on vacation. lol.

OK - ER You inspired me to climb into the rafters of the garage to retrieve a few cans from my old beer can collection.
Note: the beer can collection resides in the rafters of the garage because I'm married. Enough said there.

Anyway, here are a couple old Hamms cans. The roached out one (on the left) was pre-pop top.

Coming from Ohio, I had never heard of Hamms beer until I got to Vandenberg AFB in 1971. I recall that the Master Sergeant in
our office referred to them as Hamm sandwiches, which led me to believe they often constituted his lunch.

That reminds me of a short story to illustrate how crazy the military was back then. Every time there was a three day weekend,
they would hold a Commanders Call on Friday after work. All personnel were required to attend. The purpose of the Commanders Call
was to remind everyone not to drink and drive over the long weekend. The Commanders Call was always held at the NCO club.
By late Friday night, everyone staggered (or drove) home loaded.

Gardena was famous for it's gambling, but this is the first I've heard about card rooms in El Monte.

I wish they had included an address, I'd like to see if the building is still standing.

There is a street number on the sign (in two places)

'mystery' location

"Original slide, Los Angeles Railway (LARy) streetcar #1437, Los Angeles Calif."

old file / ebay images

That's a fine looking building on the left edge of the slide. (I think it might say Ella's or Etta's on the window)

The 1956 CD lists Eastern Dental, Instrument Manufacturer at 4719 W Washington Boulevard. There's nothing in the CD that matches the business name on the left. It looks like both visible buildings are still standing.

So glad the building in the 1956 slide is still standing!

It really is an intriguing building (wide-angle view below)

gsv

It's a bit difficult to tell, but I believe it's three or four separate buildings painted alike (one owner no doubt)

Update:

Yep, it's three separate buildings

Google_aerial

There's some recent activity in the middle building.

That facade screams out 'noirish' cocktail lounge. (note the porthole window in the door) -covered in tin-foil?

Here's a unique view of Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe. (new to NLA)

eBay

a closer look.

I can't tell if the 'death' garage is there or not.

The pic of the garage in this post makes me think it wouldn't be visible in the coastal postcard

If you flip this photo, it says "Mrs Jennie Jones and Sousa".

Here is another photo of John Philip Sousa wearing the same type uniform.

www.dws.org/sousa

Sousa died on March 6, 1932, so the picture was taken sometime prior to that date.

Other than that, I have no idea who Jennie Jones was, or why they were in that tunnel.

Excellent sleuthing FredH! I am now thoroughly intrigued.

A Jennie Jones was proprietor of the Hotel Roosevelt (and another was a teacher)

lapl

but 1901 is many years earlier than the 'tunnel' photo.
__

One thing I hadn't noticed before.......there's a third person in the tunnel photo.

My guess is that Jennie is a music teacher and LCDR Sousa is handing her a baton.

Iconic 1958 LA modernist home For Sale.

Steel beams, minimalist interior....strictly one for the modern idealist. Price not specified but I'm sure it's big-ticket.

Go here to see the suave cool interior:

I thought I recognized that entryway. Here it is 56 years earlier.

Pierre Koenig's CSH #21 is covered by a Julius Shulman photoset. There are over 30 images in the set, so if you can wait, I'll make it the subject of tomorrow's Julius Shulman post.

----------------

It's time for another mystery Julius Shulman post. This is "Job 4438: Jerome White, Redondo Beach Apartments (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 1968".

I think these first two are on a slight hill.

All have large street numbers prominently displayed, but no street names.

All from Getty Research Institute

There's a chance that they are/were on the same street. Does anyone recognize these Redondo Beach apartments or know where to find them?
