Futurescape City Tour

How might new technologies shape the future of Edmonton and the Alberta Capital Region? How can innovation be shaped in ways which support the future sustainability, prosperity and well-being of our cities and their communities? How can innovations and new technologies be developed in ways which account for local contexts and local needs? And, what sorts of networks and communities can support locally accountable forms of innovation?

Join researchers at the University of Alberta’s City-Region Studies Centre in addressing the above questions as part of an interactive tour exploring the relationship between novel technologies and the future of our city-region. In particular the tour will explore leading research in the development of nanotechnologies, and the emergence of a nanotechnology sector in Edmonton. Your voice is important in building a local conversation about these technologies and the future of Edmonton and the Alberta Capital Region.

As a participant in the tour you will:
• learn about new urban technologies, including leading edge developments in nanotechnology, through a guided tour of the city-region.
• engage with expert stakeholders including scientists, engineers, government officials and city planners.
• join social scientists in exploring the relationship between technologies and the past, present and future of the city-region.
• explore the relationship between innovation, nanotechnology and community through photography.
• participate in a dialogue about technologies and desirable urban futures with fellow tour participants.
• help design a public exhibition exploring the relationship between nanotechnology and the city to be hosted at the Telus World of Science on Saturday, November 16, 2013.

Event Dates:
Orientation and Welcome Dinner – Friday October 4, 2013 (5pm-8pm)
Futurescape City Tour – Saturday October 26, 2013 (10am-4pm)
Deliberation – Friday November 1, 2013 (5pm-8pm)
