In the past....before I realized just how much had gone one & was going on in cities all over the world, including ones in places like brazil that I've never heard of....I'd have thought a lot of current & proposed new bigger devlpt in dtla was overdoing it. It may still be that way in terms of how much absorption of new apts, condos & definitely office space the hood can handle. But when I see what exists in other parts of the globe....even done by merely anonymous homeowners....it's hard not to become jaded....

^ Funders & real estate companies from that country are a big reason a lot of devlpt that had been merely talked about in dtla....& delayed for yrs....finally broke ground over the past 2 yrs. Sometimes we in LA come off like the bigger cousin of Fresno.

^ Damn, within blocks of each other we could have five towers with the following floor counts:

52
51
60
70
60

3,271 units between all five of them.

Now the former Transamerica Building won't be as lonely anymore.

I didn't realize the community gym on LA street still required another adjacent bldg to have to be torn down. hope that doesn't slow down the proj's completion date.

I liked this other pic of yours since it shows the new apt proj inserted between the 2 phases of the avant apt bldgs.....that part of fig st now has a decent street wall. It may not be highrise & super high density, as many sspers prefer or demand. but it finally means a part of dtla seen for over 40 yrs by a lot of tourists & travelers in LA to attend an event at the convention ctr won't be entering the area from a major street that had long been a row of gloom & dilapidation.

A squandered opportunity to develop some tall buildings here, extending the skyline down to the 10.

L.A. signed off on two downtown hotel tower (Fig & Pico - three hotels inside two towers).
There is a huge amount of skyscrapers heading to the starting line.

Los Angeles's construction boom continues. Be happy, don't worry.

a lot of other opportunities remain in dt....this pic doesn't show most of the newer devlpt, but it does show many of the rundown lots that still exist throughout the southern half of dt....

Colliers International

Infill in dtla still isn't the easiest thing possible since most businesses continue to favor other sections of LA....or other cities....to locate their offices, including headquarters. Relying solely on apts, condos & hotels to help fill in the gaps in dt is similar to a car running on 3 tires.

Amazing pictures as always Hunter!

Does anyone know what logo adorns Two California Plaza now? It's a shame it stands out so much. At least the old Deloitte & Touche logo that used to be up there was a dark blue that blended into the skyscraper. Personally I think the California Plaza towers look much better without logos but as we all know logos are common with DTLA skyscrapers.

EDIT: Looks like it's City National Bank: http://www.ladowntownnews.com/news/c...c9afc029d.html

It's also been renamed "City National 2CAL" this article claims City National Bank is the first company to have two towers in DTLA with it's logo on them but the U.S. Bank Tower and the Aon Center both used to have First Interstate logos on them...I think the Bank Of America Center and the City National Bank Tower both used to have Bank Of America logos for a brief period of time? https://newsroom.cnb.com/news/city-n...wn-los-angeles

Don't forget about the ARCO towers in the 90's.

^^^ Totally forgot! If I remember correctly the Bank Of America Center, Paul Hastings Tower, and 1055 West 7th all had ARCO logos on them at one point.

I agree with the sentiment that the street wall across from the convention center is not bad. Would 12 or so stories have been better? Sure. But you see this height and even rather generic look all over Tokyo and in the grand scheme is provides a great urban feel. I think LA should definitely aspire to have a large base of 7 to 10 stories structures.

The only time LA gets that wrong is when they are monoliths in width. We need structures that are taller than they are wide, or at least give that appearance. The developments on Wilshire are actually pretty good in this regard. They are wide projects but they segregate the buildings with vertical elements from top to bottom. A lot of projects try breaking breaking up facades in ways that only accentuate how unbearable wide they are.

It's not even the first time City National Bank has had its name on two towers simultaneously.

Height transfers from one parcel to another should be used more frequently. The only time it has been used in L.A. as far as I know is when the builders of Library Tower (now US bank) transfered height rights from the Central Library parcel and were thus able to erect a 73 story tower. In exchange, the Central Library got the cash it needed to rebuild a better library. The only way LA will get more 70 or 80 story towers on compact parcels is probably through some form of height transfers. Is the proposed Angel's Landing project going to use height transfers?

Plenty of proposed projects are using height transfers, at least 3 or 4 that I can think of off the top of my head
