Szentendre - small Serbian town in Hungary

I guess its a nice way to celebrate the new Eurovision voting block of Serbia & Hungary - we gave each other the maximum 12 points in Helsinki

Its hard to visit Budapest and not to go to Szentendre, which is listed in almost all travel guides as one of two or three "Day Trip" options out of Budapest.

Its a small town of 25.000 people, located just north of Budapest (reachable by Budapest's suburban rail), along the Danube river, close to the border with Slovakia actually. For Serbian tourists, its a must visit when in Hungary, due to the town's immense treasure trove of Serbian history & culture.

It was during the Ottoman rule of the Balkans, that a lot of Serbs who found it unbearable to live under their rule, chose to move to other surrounding regions - many ended up in Hungary.

Today, very few Serbs remain in Szentendre as most have returned after the Ottomans were expelled and the rest were also assimilated into Hungarian society. But the mark they have left on the town is still quite visible - you can see almost a dozen Serbian-built churches(only a couple still belong to Serbian Orthodox Church, as the rest have been given to other Christian churches), a museum about the Serb Orthodox Church and many streets & squares bearing the names of Serbian writers, poets, reformers, warlords and tsars.

Enjoy!

Looks like a real nice place. If/when I go to Budapest I might check it out

btw - 25k wouldn't be a small town up here, more like a mid-size town. Gotta love being larger than Germany with only 9M people
