Mass. House approves $1.1b convention center expansion

A $1.1 billion expansion of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center could begin within the next 18 months after the Massachusetts House of Representatives approved a bill Wednesday authorizing funding for the massive project.

The 130-19 vote was a major milestone for the proposal, which has received support from Governor Deval Patrick and Senate President Therese Murray. It would increase the size of the convention center by 60 percent, an expansion that the convention authority says is needed to attract the nation’s largest meetings and trade shows.

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority also said Wednesday that several top hotel companies have joined a separate competition to build a 1,000-room headquarters hotel next to the South Boston facility. Among the companies to submit letters of interest were Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, MGM Resorts, Omni, and Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

The new hotel and expansion of exhibit space would put Boston among the top convention destinations in the United States, according to James Rooney, executive director of the Convention Center Authority. He said the expansion, expected to be completed in 2019, would create thousands of jobs.

Bids for Johnson Building Redo; 'Wrong Way' in Allston

COPLEY SQUARE—The Boston Public Library has put out the bat signal for bidders to renovate part of its Johnson Building: "The project at 700 Boylston Street seeks to renovate 130,000 square feet of public space within the 425,690-square-foot, seven-story facility. Five developers to vie for Quincy’s Central Middle School

The city of Quincy received five bids to purchase and redevelop the shuttered Central Middle School at 1022 Hancock St.
Quincy will choose a developer this summer based on price, responsiveness to “green” design objectives, construction experience, good standing in the industry and the financial stability to complete the project, said Christopher Walker, a spokesman for Mayor Thomas Koch. The three-story, brick school was built in 1890 but has been vacant since October 2013.
Last month, Quincy’s purchasing department issued a Request for Proposals to acquire and repurpose the 59,490-square-foot building with the construction of apartments or condominiums.

The developers that submitted bids are:

Urban Edge Housing Corp., of Roxbury and South Shore Star in Weymouth. The bid for $2.4 million proposes 38 units of affordable housing, would maintain the building’s exterior, and provide space for non-profit South Shore Stars on lower floors.

Edgewood Development Co., Plainville. The $3 million bid proposes 39 condominiums and to maintain the building's exterior.

Hal Marsh Associates and the Edmund Quincy Towers Team of Quincy. The $1.1 million bid proposes to demolish the school and replace it with a pair of 13-story residential towers with 400 units and ground floor retail/restaurant space.

Jay Cashman and Conroy Development of Quincy. The $1.5 million bid proposes 45 units of housing while keeping the existing building.
Boston Property Development of Quincy. The $1.8 million bid proposes 54 units of housing while maintaining the existing building.

Trinity seeks to buy Ashmont Tire, erect mixed-use building

Trinity Financial, Inc. has entered into an agreement to purchase Ashmont Tire for an undisclosed price and intends to build a six-story residential building with ground-floor retail space, a development that would mirror the successful Carruth building across the street. The existing tire and auto repair business across from Ashmont station could become the next major redevelopment site on Dorchester Avenue— if an emerging plan from Trinity is embraced by neighbors.

Add another luxury tower to the Rose Kennedy Greenway: Developer Boston Residential (clever) wants to build a 12-story condo building on India Street in the Financial District-North End borderlands.

The building would have 44 condos ranging from 600-square-foot 1-BRs to 1,750-square-foot 3-BRs and would include 4,000 square feet of restaurant/residential space—all on a site that's now a small parking lot (Boston needs condos, after all, not more goddamn parking spaces).

Brighton's Massive Boston Landing Wants to Add Housing

More big doings in Boston's next It Neighborhood: Sneaker kingpin New Balance wants to add housing to its massive Boston Landing project in Brighton. The Herald's Donna Goodison has the details: "The Boston company is seeking city approval for up to 295,000 square feet of residential space by adding an approximately 2-acre parcel at 125 Guest Street to the development scope. It purchased the property for $10 million in February."

Recall that Boston Landing is already slated to include a 250,000-square-foot HQ for New Balance as well as a 345,000-square-foot sports complex with an NHL-regulation arena and a 175-room hotel; there will also be up to 650,000 square feet of office space spread amongst three buildings; 1,750 parking spaces; and 65,000 square feet of retail (though this amount might shrink).

Marlborough lands new Boston Scientific headquarters

Boston Scientific, a medical devices giant, already has a complex in Marlborough, but the addition of a headquarters building is another boost for the city, which has used tax breaks to help lure several other major companies in recent months.

Quest Diagnostics Inc. is opening a 1,200-employee laboratory in Marlborough, and the retailing giant TJX Cos. is establishing a large office complex there.

The company, which makes mathematical computing software for engineers and scientists, expects to add 400 employees next year, bringing its workforce in Massachusetts to 2,200.

“MathWorks is fortunate to be in a growth mode and is pleased at the prospect of expanding into such a renowned property,” said Jeanne O’Keefe, chief financial officer.

Developer looks to build a 30-unit condo project on L Street in Southie

Peter Leoutsakos has filed plans with the Boston Redevelopment Authority for a 30-unit mid-rise at 45 L Street. The five-story building would feature two-bedroom units and 1,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The lower level will accommodate a fitness center for residents, storage space and a meeting room available for the neighborhood. The project also includes 32 parking spaces on street level. Construction is expected to commence in the fourth quarter.

That location, which was great for reporters, will be even better for the residents of the $500 million Ink Block, with the city and its attractions literally at their feet.

A total of six buildings are planned, each featuring a unique design inspired by the South End and intended to be an antidote to the Boston's increasingly hard to tell apart bevy of new luxury condo towers, Ted Tye, managing director of National Development, tells me.

"There is so much being built in the city these days that is very generic - you can't tell whether you are in the Seaport, the Back Bay, or the South End," Tye says.

There are also a couple of significant highrises going up just north of the Charles River, and west of I-93. Passed by them on Wednesday on the way to Fenway Park, but my phone had died, and wasn't able to get a shot of them. Lots of activity in Boston!

There is. Especially on the midrise level. When it comes to high rises, a lot of them are being planned near the waterfront. Also, in nearby Cambridge and Somerville; several projects being planned. Also, Harvard is planning a huge expansion, and Somerville is doing something along the lines of a planned community. The city continues to add residents at a fast rate. Its one of the fastest growing big cities along with Seattle, Houston, and Dallas for example.

Visited the aquarium the other day and from across the water there was a crane erected next to 2 concrete elevator shafts. There was some early steel work around the base. One of the concrete shafts had a flag hanging saying "Boston Strong". Anyone know what development it is? Corner of Liberty Drive and Courthouse Way
