High-speed rail welcomes 5 millionth passenger
06/04/2007 (Taiwan News)

The Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. welcomed its 5 millionth passenger on Sunday, five months after it launched its passenger service between Taipei and Kaohsiung, the two largest cities in Taiwan.
A 70-year-old passenger, identified as Chen Feng-hsiung, walked out of Banqiao Station a happy man after receiving his prizes - a model high-speed train and 10 business-class tickets valid for one year - at a ceremony from Chia Hsian-teh, a deputy manager of the THSRC in charge of public relations.

Chen was traveling with his family and a group of 40 friends from his neighborhood in Changhua in central Taiwan. He said that he had booked the tickets for himself and his family at the end of May for a one-day sightseeing trip from Wuri in Taichung County to Banqiao and that he was surprised to be informed on the train that he was the 5 millionth passenger.

Chen said he had already ridden a high-speed train six times and felt quite comfortable with the services, adding that he will use the 10 open-end tickets for more sight-seeing trips with his family.

The THSRC, which began its passenger service January 5 this year, has twice increased the number of trains each day to enhance its services. On March 31, it increased the number of trains going in each direction from 19 to 25 per day. On June 1, the company again increased the number of trains in both directions from 25 to 31 daily.

THSRC executives said they estimate that the total number of high speed train passengers transported since January 5 will surpass the 10 million mark in September.

is this a new TRA station? does anyone know which one it is... shizi??

btw, can't stand the vomit-inducing color choices- from the hideous livery to the gaudy seat covers. the EMU700 is the epitome of bad taste.

Nice train; I love trains. The only train ride I took in Taiwan was on an Alishan small train to see sunrise.

it looks more like a subway train rather than a commuter train.

I would've preferred that they kept the factory paint job. The new colors on the front face just sent the train 10 years back in time.

How's the fare?

I'd imagine they'd be cheaper than regular train? Since they're commuter and meant to be taken regularly, probably between home and office?

Yeah, the fare is really cheap - about NT$1.5 per km.

Some old photos of TRA(red) and "light" rails(blue)(I don't know how to say it in english)

http://www.citycat.hdud.idv.tw/map1925.htm

Imagine if half of them still existed today...

note that Tamsui(Danshui) line has become part of Taipei MRT's red line.

平溪線 is in operation too. It is not in this particular map, so I didn't mention it. You can find 平溪線 in some of the old maps from the link.

The TRA's rapid transit plan is finally starting to take shape. The rolling stock is not quite as sharp looking as the MRT, but it does have the same general exterior appearance of classic subways.
