Columbia University Interdisciplinary Science Building by Santa&Cole reference projects
New York | United States | Completed November 2010

The greatly awaited Northwest Corner Building, designed by Moneo Brock Studio, was inaugurated May 2010 on the Morningside campus of Columbia University, in New York City. Conceived as a multidisciplinary science building and LEED GREEN certified, it comprises twenty-one new laboratories and a state of the art auditorium, as well as classrooms, faculty offices, a cafeteria and a digital science library.

The Hospital de Puyo emerged as a major architectural challenge in response to a national emergency which called for the design, construction and outfitting of a latest-generation hospital facility in record time (less than one year), but without giving up on building a leading hospital. Here we are dealing with a modular project featuring a high degree of prefabrication, dry construction and a marked commitment to local industry and society. The project plan is based on an intellectual concept of conception, design and construction defining a series of organisational rules governing processes to ensure the quality of the facility’s use, performance, construction and maintenance. Norway's Jektvik Ferry Quay Area is an Efficiently Built Daylit Building

In the far northern reaches of Norway is a town with a new ferry terminal building that pushes the limits of daylighting. The new Jektvik Ferry Quay Area by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk is a prefabricated, modular structure with a twisted glazed façade. Though this building is small in stature, the applications for this type of design in Northern Scandinavian countries are limitless. The building's transparency, warmth, and simplicity of construction are welcome features during Norway's dark, cold winters.

Skyscrapers have always been symbols of architectural, economic and national might, the taller the better. They are meant to be seen from miles around. But a new tower slated to go up outside of Seoul, South Korea, has been designed with a twist: It is meant to be seen--and then not seen. The Tower Infinity, designed by the multinational GDS Architects, uses technology to render itself "invisible," or at the very least, optically camouflaged.

marking the end of a 30 year endeavor, the fourth and final phase of the skirball center by moshe safdie is complete and set to open to the public in october. sited at the base of a once-barren hill in los angeles, the skirball center complex is the united states' largest jewish cultural institution and is programmatically dedicated to showcasing and sustaining 4000 years of jewish heritage. the joint vision of uric d. herscher and the architect, at the time the project was safdie's first cultural project in the U.S. the completion of the campus will be commemorated by a retrospective of safdie's design philosophy and practice over his 50 year career, entitled 'global citizen: the architecture of moshe safdie.'

David Adjaye, Mass Extinction Monitoring Observatory in Portland (UK)

Inspired by the spiral form of gastropod fossils found in quarries on the Isle of Portland, on the south coast of Britain, the Mass Extinction Monitoring Observatory (MEMO) – designed by the London-based team of David Adjaye – is devoted to endangered species of the animal kingdom. Situated near the edge of a cliff, the 30-meter-tall structure will house an information and exhibition center, with a passage showing 850 extinct species on the walls and leading to the top of the building, where an observatory gives views of the limestone landscape.

The Crystal, Kiruna's newly designed city hall, is set to deliver a modern facelift to Northern Sweden’s arctic landscape. Henning Larsen Architects created the competition-winning design in collaboration with Tema Landscape Architects, WSP Engineers Sweden and UiWE Cultural Designers. Uniquely crafted to withstand the harsh tundra, the ring-shaped building will also lead as a strong design precedent for the future development of Kiruna's new city center.

breitensee studios by holodeck architects

after four years, the construction of the breitensee studios in vienna by austrian holodeck architects has finally completed. the central urban business location has been transformed to become an intelligent and functional business park with an urban typology. the resident production companies are supplemented with offices, studios and manufacturing plants from the creative industries and are converted into the ambient business complex. residual voids create a three-dimensional development of alternatively allocated exterior areas, which double up as office terraces and also help boost communication and shape the identity of the zone.

Níall McLaughlin, Bishop Edward King Chapel in Cuddeson (England)

The London studio Niall McLaughlin built the new Bishop Edward King Chapel with the idea of respecting the surroundings: a beech grove and 19th-century buildings belonging to the Ripon Theological College of Cuddesdon, an English village nine kilometers from Oxford. The building replaces the old chapel with a main elliptical space. Opening at the top with a row of windows, the outer wall is made of small sand-colored stone blocks that create a zigzagging texture. The wooden cladding of the interior has a warming effect that creates the intimacy ideal for prayer, with branched columns forming an inner wall.

The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning opened today at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, bringing under one roof 2,000 researchers, trainees and staff previously dispersed throughout six buildings. At 778,000 sq ft, the 21-storey laboratory designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects is believed to be the largest child health research tower in the world and among the largest laboratories in the high-rise form.
