Of Hippies and Hipsters Pt. 1: Telegraph's Got Seoul

First of all, thank you Clevelumbus for the great thread idea. The idea is to tour the entirety of Telegraph Avenue, one of the most infamous and colorful streets in America. In recent years, an interesting division has appeared; the Berkeley side closer to CAL retains its 60's hippy culture - yes, including smoking weed out in the open - while the Oakland side is increasingly becoming the east bay go-to for hipsters. If one treks further down Telegraph around 580, however, one sees another development: Koreatown and Telegraph Ave have become synonymous, and interestingly, much to the chagrin of the locals.
A couple years ago, Oakland began to market the new Koreatown located primarily in the Northgate and Pill Hill neighborhoods with the campaign slogan "Oakland's Got Seoul". The problem: Where are all the Koreans? The vast majority of the Korean business owners live in other east bay suburbs or San Francisco, which brings into question what the real identity of the Koreatown area is. Why did the city specifically collaborate with these Korean business owners and their neighborhood business coalition when there's been local businesses the entire time? Even Asians as a monolithic group are still in the minority; blacks are the clear majority of both neighborhoods and whites are clearly the second largest group. However, there are valid arguments in favor of the designation; it could bring increased foot traffic to the area and add more depth to greater Downtown Oakland. The outcry certainly had an effect, though; the city is now working more closely with the residents to select the best route for how to increase the strip's profile.

As you could probably tell from the thread header, these photos are focusing on the Koreatown section of Telegraph.

The Mosswood pics are in North Oakland; the rest are in Downtown.

^hmm... why does this streetscape look so familiar?

^Oh yeah, that's why. lol

Sadly these are the only Telegraph Ave shots I took today... the rest are Broadway. I know, I wrote a slightly misleading thread header... shoot me.

Why should that streetscape be familiar? I don't understand.

Great pictures of some great streets!

Up by UC Berkeley is the hippie mecca and around 51st (in Temescal) is the hipster zone.

But for the hell of it, here's a picture I neglected to post because of the car:

I can't tell if that's just a hipster beard on steroids or if its a homeless beard, of which there are an equal amount on Telegraph. Damn, that should have been part of the title lol.

No, I understood what you wrote. I just thought they'd be in the thread based on the thread title. Thanks for the tour, though! I will definitely hit up these places the next time I am in NoCal
