What a scum bag. No wonder they have been pushed out of the Hamilton market.

I have heard through a friend that MIP will be announcing soon who will be building their new hotel. They are finalizing their negotiations with the company that will build and operate it. It will be going across the street from the Atrium Building in the parking lot.

I stayed at the Kichi's hotel before. They can blame Hamilton all they want, but I'd say it had something to do with the management. It was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at.

Back at the Sheraton, 80 per cent of the hotel's 301 rooms have been renovated so far. They now feature plush beds, plasma flatscreen TVs, wired and wireless Internet connections and polished bathrooms. The hotel's restaurant, Chagall's, and an adjacent lounge have been fully redone, and there are more meeting rooms and an expanded fitness centre.

The ballroom area will soon be renovated and the plan is to aggressively go after the wedding and convention market. The front entrance and lobby will also be redone, and some office space will be added to the ground floor. There will also be a third-floor outdoor patio adjacent to the pool.

The goal is to have all the work wrapped up by the end of the year, says Frank Vismeg, an industry veteran who has launched and turned around hotels all over the world. He's been hired to handle marketing for the Sheraton. The plan is to achieve a 4.5-star rating when the renovations are done, he says.

David Adames, executive director of Tourism Hamilton, says the Sheraton is the city's biggest hotel and a critical piece in attracting conventions and sporting events.

“The reinvestment was very welcome. … We had heard complaints from customers about the hotel being tired.”

Sheraton owner Darko Vranich, who bought the 23-year-old hotel in September 2008, is aiming to break ground on a new 138-unit Staybridges Suite at the corner of Hess and George streets in July. Vranich also has plans for a 182-room Homewood Suites in the area, along with 300-400 residential units.

He owns hotels in Burlington, Haliburton, London, Sudbury, Huntsville and North Bay.

Apparently a major Hotel chain has put in an offer to purchase the City Motor motel at the Delta.

(The City Motor is at the Queenston Traffic Circle, not the Delta)

It's interesting that this vague rumour appeared at the same time as Councillor Merulla's rally to close the motel.

There is also a city rezoning meeting this month for the former Herbie's property beside the motel where the applicant wants to open a flea market.

There have been chains interested in the property before. They could never come to an agreement.

Notorious City Motor Hotel seized by city

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...seized-by-city

The city has voted to take control of the notorious City Motor Hotel.

Councillors voted unanimously today to expropriate the seedy landmark near the Queenston Traffic Circle. Councillor Sam Merulla says he envisions the property becoming a mix of commercial and residential properties and a transit hub for buses or a future LRT line.

Although the property is listed for sale by two separate parties, city staff say it isn’t clear who has title to the property. There are about five or six different parties with title interests in the motel, said Art Zuidema, the city’s director of corporate initiatives.

project closes hotel deficit

http://www.thespec.com/news/business...-hotel-deficit

Hamilton’s hotel room deficit is dwindling quickly, prompting hopes of turning the city into a destination for larger conventions.

On Monday, the city’s general issues committee approved a grant-loan package worth almost $10 million for a hotel on Bay Street between King and Main proposed by developer Darko Vranich.

Combined with an earlier Vranich project — the Staybridge Suites hotel that’s rising at George and Caroline streets — more than 300 rooms will be added to the local inventory by this time next year.

“That obviously changes the situation,” said Sue Monarch, acting director of Tourism Hamilton. “This really changes our ability to draw some larger conventions and meetings here.”

Hamilton has an inventory of just over 1,400 hotel rooms following the opening of the Best Western C Hotel by Carmen’s, on the east Mountain. Vranich’s Staybridge will bring another 130 into the mix by the end of this summer.

The grant-loan package approved by the city’s general issues committee will go toward a 180-room inn Vranich plans to build on Bay Street under one of the Hilton brands. It is to be finished by next summer.

Those developments are in addition to recent renovations of both the Sheraton and Crowne Plaza properties downtown.

Monarch said it will likely be two to three years before the expanded hotel inventory pays off in more convention business — once the inns are built, the city has to be marketed as a potential destination for convention organizers who’d previously written off Hamilton.

That, in turn, will be helped by the new properties opening the city to new reservation systems.

“The more brands we get into the city, the more it enhances our reputation,” said Monarch. “We can’t help but suspect this will be good for the city.”

Hotel developers typically look at statistics such as room occupancy rates and the outlook for business travel in an area when deciding where to build. Where developers like occupancy rates to average 70 per cent, Hamilton had an average of 54.7 per cent in 2010 (the most recent statistics available) — marginally lower than in 2009 but still an improvement from 2008.

Neil Everson, Hamilton’s director of economic development, said the new hotels will also spur efforts to revive the city’s core “because projects like this say something about the redevelopment of downtown.”

The hotels are part of a multimillion-dollar development including four new buildings that will bring as many as 600 condo units and 20,000 square feet of retail space to the downtown.

A brain child of developer Darko Vranich, the $125-million project has been on the drawing boards for the past decade as he slowly assembled a huge chunk of the city’s core.

The buildings are to be completed in five phases over the next six or seven years. The entire project is seen as a way of linking the restaurant-bar hub of Hess Village to the rest of the downtown.

Looks like Sheraton is going to renovate the lobby this late summer/fall season. Apparently a new cafe is coming, I have a strong feeling it's going the first Starbucks in downtown Hamilton.

I have to think downtown Hamilton could have supported a Starbucks long ago. I've seen a few in a couple of meh locations. Still a good sign and good for Jackson, especially that end of the mall.

Complete demo and rebuild, probably 4 storey. Which means Hooters will need a new place soon. They've been rumoured to move at King and Bay for months.

I believe that the person who owns Hooters also owns the George Hamilton Tavern, but I'm not sure.

New Hotel Proposed for Linc and Upper James (1187-1201 Upper James Street)

By: JOEY COLEMAN

Upper James at the Linc will soon have a new four-storey hotel if Councillors agree with the staff recommendation to approve a proposed development to the southeast of the highway interchange.

The proposed development will see a four-storey hotel (which was proposed as a six-storey hotel in 2007), a new large commercial building (such as a restaurant), and one strip plaza.

Nearby properties were sent a notice of the development, none of the 72 properties submitted feedback.

From City of hamilton web site.

The subject application was originally submitted in November 2007, at which time a six (6) storey hotel and associated commercial uses were proposed. The application has since been revised and now constitutes a four (4) storey hotel located towards the rear of the site, and two new buildings, along with one existing building, to be built fronting onto Upper James Street.

Presently the HOWARD JOHNSON HAMILTON (and ex Hooters)
Owner: 1163133 Ontario Ltd., (Oscar Kichi) Owner
Agent: Chamberlain Architect Services Ltd.

No big loss there.
