Calgary: 2006 Year in Review + 2007 Wishlist

Well, as we thought at this time last year 2006 was a banner year for Calgary. Just way too much to even keep track of. Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of the things that happened of significance this year. Also, below 2007's wish list!

For me, I'd like to see all of these projects move forward in the new year,

Office
FCC II
City Centre
The Bow

Residential
Anthem
Exchange
Kai Mortensen
Gateway Midtown

General
Public Library
Science Centre

I'd like to some of the other projects move ahead as well, but those are the main ones.

Another wish as well would be to see Penny Lane re-done to a single tower (55 - 60 floors) and a different design.

I thought I read that encana (the bow) is likely to get cancelled in a newspaper article a few days ago?

Yep, you heard right! Definitely cancelled, just like everything else in Calgary. None of it will ever happen so you can rest assued Edmonton will remain THE city of Alberta.

Now you can go back to your Edmonton Thread and talk about Edmonton's 'of course it will get built' amazing list of developments instead of Calgary's 'no chance it ever gets built' list of developments...

I think 2007 will be good but now quite as good as 2006 for developments.
Honestly I see the office sector to really take off especially with projects being under way. But the condo market may slow down.

I like to see in 2007,
Construction and project release of all major office projects including PLT. (Top 3, Bow, FCC2, City Centre)
Construction of Nuera 1 and St Germain/Granville.
Imperial Oil Tower being released.
Constructino of Palliser South,
Completion of Centrium Place and more designs like this to take off.
Constructino of 999 building with redesign.
L/M being embarrassment to the city and die in shame.
A major project announcement and award to a big name architect like SOM, KPF, IM Pei, Renzo Piano, Peli etc. (Library)
Progress of East village,
Completion of GE5 to relieve migrains,
Asian carrier to announce service to YYC like Korean Air!
Another Cargo airline to announce service to YYC.
Condo prices dropping down enough so that I too can buy one of these so called sky homes
Revival of Skytower and resume construction.
Exchange 1, ll, lll, iV to release and one of them to go ahead.
Stampede Station parcel 4 releasing its design.
OPUS Heritage Station,
Flames Palace finally opening up.

I wish in 2007:
- People finally stop saying they like Encana but wish it was thinner.
- Penny Lane gets cancelled and the developers ask for forgiveness for trying to mask over mediocrity by trying to make the term "shifting plates" mean something.
- It's revealed that stucco was invented by an eastern Liberal, and therefore it's use is now reviled and outlawed in the province of Alberta.
- Even worse, the color tan was invented by the NDP! see above for consequences.

My wish list is to see the Bow, and all the U of C projects underway.

And that if PLT does get canceled, its done BEFORE they demolish the block and leave us with another empty lot (although it could be used temporarily as parking I suppose, which could be a good thing).

2006 was a very good year, but 2007 looks to be even better. We will be seeing some major projects on the rise, Jamieson and Cenntenial, possibly The Bow, as well as a host of good looking residential projects like Colors, Union Square, Xenex, Encore and Nova, Castello.....just to name a few.

My high points for 2006, were Centrium turning out really well, Chocolate Arriva and Brava. Citadel West was the bonus surprise of the year for me.

2007 will be great no matter what happens with projects like the Bow and FCC 2, there are just too many things going on here...............

I forget about more of our projects than most cities have in total!

One last thing on the wishlist. Probably won't happen in 2007 though....

I'd like to see something developed on the NW corner of 17th and 4th. Preferably a 3 or 4 storey mixed use building with brightly lit advertising, something along the lines of Time Square or Piccadilly Circus, obviously on a smaller scale.
Wouldn't that be a great intersection to have the buildings on all 4 corners have major lighting and signage?
