Calgary Road Construction/Closures

If you are driving this weekend (May 12), try to avoid Sarcee Trail SW, Bow Trail, 37 St SW and 17 Avenue west of Crowchild as Bow Trail between 37st and Strathcona Blvd/Old Banff Coach Road is closed for construction. Just walk, ride a bike or stay home, drink beer and enjoy the sunshine !

Here is the up to date list of advisories

I'll make it handier: driving everywhere will suck all summer due to the sheer amount of roadwork.

Sound like fun. It'll be faster to go to banff from my house then it would be to go downtown. (I live in the west end.)

That, incidentally, is exactly WHY I live on the west side of town.

Best resource for closures: http://www.gov.calgary.ab.ca/citybea...ent/index.html

They post a moderately thorough listing usually at least a few days in advance. Plus it's handy to find out various other news items.

14th Street SW Southbound is down to one lane due to construction.

Holy crap but the construction on Deerfoot by Barlow is annoying. Each direction loses the passing lane for a kilometre or so, and it pretty much brings Saturday afternoon traffic to a halt.

On a positive note, in my attempts to avoid this again I went down 22x - anyone who hasn't seen the bridgework, go check it out! This baby will be twinned by the fall at the latest from the looks of things (finally).

I wish I would have read some of this before I was in Calgary this past weekend. On Saturday I took the Deerfoot (which had construction) from MacKenzie towne up to Glenmore (which had construction) to Crowchild (which had major construction) to get to Tuscany. When it was time to head back, I thought I'd try 14th to Anderson but that was an even bigger mistake. The drive both directions took about an hour. Totally brutal.

And until the ring road is complete, it ain't gonna get much better. Saturdays are positively hell to drive in the city here. We're driving a road system intended for 3/4 the population - the construction is just icing on the cake.
