Arrow Sweet Auburn: 08/08/08

To celebrate my 500th post on this forum (and 08/08/08), I decided to upload some pics I took of the King Center and Freedom Parkway on a BEAUTIFUL Friday afternoon.

Here we go...

Plaza entrance

Civil Rights Walk of Fame

Gandhi Statue

Park Entrance on Auburn Avenue

Downtown from Sweet Auburn (not a widely photographed view IMO)

Ebenezer Baptist Church (MLK Senior's Church)

The newer Ebenezer Baptist Church across the street

The King Center

The tomb of MLK Jr. and Coretta Scott King

Old Fire Station #6

Shotgun houses on Auburn Avenue

Some cool examples of Auburn Avenue architecture

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Birth Home

Plaque on the walkway

The modern Downtown Atlanta Skyline from the Home's front porch with shotgun houses in front (nice view!)

One of my favorite vantage points of Downtown (from the Jackson Street Bridge)

New construction to the left of the previous photo (I forgot the name of this development)

Allen Plaza and North Avenue clusters from Jackson Street, coming into their own

City Hall East on Ponce (former Sears warehouse)

And some shots of Freedom Parkway (taken while driving of course)

THE END (for now)

Does anyone know or understand the purpose behind the covered section of Freedom Parkway (shown above - 3rd from last photo)?

Prevents ice from falling onto the road from the adjacent towers and guy wires.

I actually find it pretty...interesting. Put ivy (or kudzu) over it and it would look like something out of a jungle.

Very nice!

One of the more ironic (and unfortunate) aspects of the Sweet Auburn area is persistent cadre of folks literally living under the bridge at the Connector. How sad, and literally within eyeshot of Dr. King's tomb.
