Prop 6 is 56% opposed, 40% in favor

So Mouron loses and the bridge is definitely getting built

north42 is correct. It is a foundation of America law that governments cannot pass ex post facto laws. The deal has already been signed, so the amendment would not apply. Plus, the amendment refers to bridges that Michigan is spending money on. Since Canada will be spending the money, I don't see why there would be a need for a vote anyway.

Either way, projections say the NO has a lead of 68% to 32% - so there is NO way Proposal 6 will win!

Quick reading on this says that the US Supreme Court has consistently ruled the the prohibition on ex post facto laws only applies to criminal matters. Regardless, I'm relieved that this won't receive even greater delays.

Another good read about the bridge and the now failed Proposal 6

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windso...r-detroit.html

An interesting snippet

Quote:
Windsor West NDP MP Brian Masse said the fact Moroun was able to spend $30 million on the campaign tells him the Ambassador Bridge tolls are too high.

Still baffled in some way that over 1,000,000 Michigan voters supported the measure.

Finally got to drive the new roundabout a couple hours ago and I like it. It seemed intimidating when I was looking at the renderings but when it came to driving it, it felt pretty natural - even in peak traffic.

The old ramps at the 401/3 Y-interchange have been shut down and all connections between 401 and 3 are now using the roundabout. The Hwy 3 flyover is now awaiting demolition (which is this weekend).

From Highway 3 East:

From Highway 3 West:

The approach to the Highway 3 flyover has been walled off:

Sorry about the picture quality - I had to rip them from video. Now that the roundabout's open there's nowhere to take stills.

The PM seemed ecstatic about the bridge being approved when interviewed about the US election.

The roundabout looks nice. In 2 lane roundabouts, trucks are supposed to take up both of them. Surprised to see that dump truck keeping to his lane.

They're allowed to but I don't think they necessarily have to.

Ambassador Bridge will still fight new bridge
Quote:
The defeat of Proposal 6 in Michigan is definitely not the end of the Ambassador Bridge company's efforts to stop a new international bridge from being built.

Michigan voters turned down the ballot question; 60 per cent voted against it.

But Mickey Blashfield, speaking on behalf of bridge owner Matty Moroun, said there are still some outstanding legal questions.

"The vote was that the people don't want to amend the constitution, that's very clear, but that's far from interpreting it as a ringing endorsement of the flawed bridge proposal," Blashfield said. "Does the governor [Rick Snyder] have the constitutional authority to do an interlocal agreement? Does the agreement stand on its own?"

The agreement signed by Ottawa and in Michigan in June has been described as an interlocal agreement, that allows two government agencies to come to an agreement and end goal.

The new bridge still needs several approvals on the American side of the border. It needs a coast guard permit and presidential permit before it can proceed.

The governor is optimistic that construction could still begin in as little as six months, he said Wednesday.

Some observers believe Moroun will now take his battle to court on both sides of the border.

"We can’t say what will happen. I will not speak about what Mr. Moroun will do in the future," Canada's Transport Minister Denis Lebel said Wednesday. "We’ll do this bridge, I’m sure of it."
And the saga continues..

The approaches for the Highway 3 flyover are being dug out. The bridge itself comes down this weekend.

Sorry for the quality. That's what happens with my camera when you shoot video looking directly at the sun.

They're actually showing an interview with Moroun on Fox 2 News tonight at 10pm. This is pretty rare (he hardly every does interviews and even more rare that he does tv interviews). They just showed a snippet of it and he comes across as a total ass.
