Quote:
Situated at Columbia and Brunette - in British Columbia’s oldest urban neighbourhood, overlooking the Fraser River - The Brewery District will be a vibrant, walkable micro-community destined to include almost 1.4 million square feet of retail, commercial, health and residential space.

On completion, 600 - 750 well-priced, high quality condominiums, lofts, and live/work spaces will feature modern, urban design with tribute to its industrial roots that maximizes usable space while supporting healthy, sustainable living that takes the focus off the car.

A key component of this community will be NewHealth, a comprehensive health campus that provides space for health centres, medical and dental offices, and other health-oriented services and spaces.

Situated along East Columbia Street, and surrounded by well- established residential neighbourhoods, an active commercial district and the busy Royal Columbian Hospital, The Brewery District will fulfill a long-standing need for day-to-day amenities such as a grocery store, bank and pharmacy while providing access to a wide variety of professional services, specialty retailers and restaurants.

There is also a prime opportunity for a iconic brew pub at The Brewery District at the highly visible, prominent corner of Columbia and Brunette - a casual gathering place for the community, employees and visitors to connect.

The Brewery District is positioned to become a busy, high-growth retail, commercial and health district. The Brewery District will also be a leading development in sustainability, envisioned to become a Gold Certified LEED Neighbourhood Development.

Wicked, this one wasnt even on my radar.

The location is pretty good, the office space/New Health will probably lease pretty quickly with the Hospital adjacent. Thanks Vanman

I figured they were going to use the land to expand the hospital, but this is awesome.

That's a Wesgroup project, they will be very busy shortly. They are one of the companies to keep an eye one.
Project looks great.

I'm really excited about this project, and this should do wonders for Sapperton Station.

If only there were still a brewery.

The M-Line sure is a catalyst for developmnt.

I'm guessing you've never actually lived near a brewery before. I used to live only a couple blocks up from the Labatts brewery when it still existed and let me tell you the smell that permeated the neighborhood was so potent you could never get used to it. Imagine a sweet yeast aroma so thick that you could almost taste it and that is what all of Sapperton smelled like 24/7

I'm sorry but I'm in Toronto at the moment. It doesn't fair much better. I just walked down Yonge Street through Dundas square (Canada's attempt at Times Square) before midnight. I could count all the people on one hand. So when you say Vancouver is boring and dead, Toronto ain't much better according to me. And in fact, I would argue that when Vancouver is boring and dead, at those moments, that's, in fact, one of its charms.

Then you will find Spuzzum the most charming place on earth

Anyways, this looks like a good development, but I was hoping for an expanded hospital.

Also, I hope this does not mean the end of yet another industrial area. When this project is done, I would like to see some manufacturing plants built on the other side of the Skytrain so the people in those towers can have somewhere to work close by (that is decent pay).

but this project does look cool, but i do hope they plan to help fix the roads in that area instead of just dumping a big development in the worse traffic zone (due to poor road design) in the metro.

I would suspect that considering these are primarily small condos right next to a SkyTrain, traffic won't increase substantially. Same story as Collingwood Village.

Without getting into a tangent, I believe (and I could be completely off here) that the market forces that are creating a "shortage" of industrial land are proving that we are finally making the shift to the knowledge economy. In the coming age, we won't need that many manufacturers or warehouses, but more offices and live/work spaces instead.

Anyways, wonderful development. It's just stellar!

Well if we build the things we need closer to home at local factories then we do not need to ship wood all the way to Asia or elsewhere, have them build it into furniture (creating jobs) and then have it shipped back over here for us to buy.

That is the problem in BC, far to many resources leave this province with almost no value added to them.

With a population of 3 million possibly by 2021, not everyone can be employed by the knowledge and non existent business sectors around here. Some industrial areas are growing, but they are all out in the valley, so in the end we have done nothing to reduce the carbon footprint, because the jobs are still located far from where people live (with no good transit connections) and we are still shipping our raw materials around the world, just for them to be shipped back again to us as a finished product.

Of course I understand that we always need trade and strong shipping connections, but it would be nice to build at least a little bit more of what we use locally. And also, maybe add a little more value to our exports.
