Yeah, its odd that we haven't seen any renderings for a project moving this close to construction, considering we've already seen renderings of other Extell developments that won't start this year (World Product Center, Riverside Center). Gehry's tower Downtown started before we saw any final renderings, but we had an idea of what it looked like.

Here are those dimensions again:

I sincerely hope that this building is nice enough to make up for the loss of those four or five smaller prewar buildings (including one large one) that really embodied the magical whimsical era of New York's 57th Street. I really hope so. This area is losing it all faster than I can keep track, with the losses on 58th street to the Centurion, the redo of 2 and 3 Columbus Circle, the teardown of the Drake, etc., etc. It's actually really saddening when I think about it.

Just another idea of where this tower would rise from Agnieszka C.

It would rise in the photo where the Hearst is visible...about 140 ft higher than the Cityspire...

Oh, pray to the gods of architecture that this gets built.

This area seems the hardest hit in the city with teardowns that may eventually lead to empty pits.

My question is, how long after a new building application is received and accepted will construction actually start? The NB was approved in early March, according to the DOB website.

A rendering would be nice. But for now we'll have to settle for imagination. No doubt it'll be a slender tower (given it's size) but the top of the "wall" is to reach 953 ft, according to the DOB applications. From then on, there could be some sort of crown or spire.

You mean the street-wall will extend, uninterrupted, for 950 feet upwards? Wow! That will be an incredible sight. How would zoning allow for something like that? I'm getting tingly thinking about it!

I didn't see anything about a streetwall.

Man, can't wait for this area to be completed. There is a development going across the street at 58th Street, 18 stories tall, I believe. That should bring a touch of class to that block, which despite its proximity to CPS, is kind of a dump.

It never looks that bad to me. Not as crowded with tourists as it used to be, but it still typical Manhattan.

Another view of the towers in the area, looking east accross the 57th Street canyon...

Meanwhile, Extell remains one of the busiest developers in town...

Extell Believes! Plans 112 New Condos

By Dana Rubinstein
April 21, 2009

Gary Barnett still believes in the New York City condo market.

On April 3, Mr. Barnett’s Extell Development filed plans with the city for a 13-story, 54-unit residential building at 147 West 21st Street. Then, on April 8, Extell filed plans for an 18-story, 58-unit building at 225 West 58th Street.

The buildings may not have been spectacular, but they provided the variation and class that help make NYC what it is/was; however, as these buildings are almost guaranteed to receive a worthy replacement by one of the most prolific and sensible development groups in the city, it is definitively a net gain. There was another cluster of buildings of roughly the same proportions (one tall, a few low rise, all old) on 34th Street across from the ESB that got demolished in favor of an all glass Apple Store, which fell through, and now languishes as a tax payer and an empty pit. Hopefully something will rise there. But in that case, the demolition of those buildings was unwarranted.
