August 28, 2012 - St. John's, N.L.

The TD Building is making slow progress. We now know the bottom floors of the building (to the height of the scaffolding) will be fake charcoal brick. The upper floors will be caramel plastic panels. Not thrilled.

It wasn't that bad in the first place. There are a few other buildings in St. John's that need a reclad more than that one did.

Awesome picture

The only thing I don't love is that huge building with red roofs on the top of the hill... It think it's a shame for a so beautifull city ... sorry to be so honnest ... btw I dont even know what it is.

Hehehe. It's O.K. Franks. Everyone hates it except a few of us in town.

Vid, I agree (now). That said, the existing Fortis Building would have been my choice for a re-clad.

That building has been getting a lot of hate recently. I'll join the bandwagon and call it a fugly piece of sh*t

The thing is that it's so "in your face" that it distracts you from the beautiful St. John's skyline.

It's a museum and archive I believe. Its architecture, in a way, reflects tradition Newfoundland houses or something. The building is called "The Rooms".

I used to detest that St. John's building, but to be completely honest, it has been growing on me to the point that I think I might actually like it.

Yes, it's a museum, art gallery (an amazing one actually), and the provincial archives. The design is supposed to mimic the traditional "rooms" that fishermen used in rural Newfoundland. Though being from rural Newfoundland, I've never actually heard of a fishing "room". If they meant fishing stage, then the Rooms looks nothing like one of those.

Oh, sorry - that's probably my fault, introducing the word stages.

Ha, every time Signal posts a St. John's picture, hate for the Rooms comes out.

I dunno, I like it. I like it's positioning, and looking st St. John's in the other direction (standing above MUN, looking towards the Harbour) the Rooms and the Basilica create almost a "gateway" look. I'm all for it, but I recognize that many, many people don't like it.

In Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver it would look awful. In St. John's, I think it fits. But I know most disagree.

Sutton Place Conversion to Britt Condos

From the Toronto Skyscraper Blog

Another quick update on the Sutton Place Restoration Project. Looks like some of the exterior work is beginning, you can see the scaffolding is being installed on the corner and work looks to have begun a bit sooner, than even I expected, just weeks after the charity auction that sold off the interior fixtures of the hotel.

From my previous blog posting:

Conversion to the Britt Condos - Lanterra Developments

The Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto is set to become a condo once the charity auction of hotel is goods is complete. The plan not only includes the conversion of the existing hotel, but also adding additional 7 floors to the tower. This is a true one of a kind project, although, I will admit I did like the way the exisitng Sutton Place looks, there is no holding back progress and advancement. So be it! The sales process has begun, and I'm sure as with most condos in Toronto this will likely have a fairly quick circle from the sales to construction

I always hoped this ugly beast would be torn down one day, instead they have decided to re-clad it. Grey Blah!

Guess they just couldn't compete with all the new 5-star hotels in town.

In a way it fits in but I dislike the pressure for modern public architecture to have overly literal, folksy gimmicks.

I wonder if anybody's ever demanded that an office building for a workers' comp board look like a giant severed hand?

The rooms notwithstanding, what an impressive skyline, for a city with no skyscrapers.
