The renewal of the Edmonton Soapbox derby is on and lots of kids registered. This event is part of the Race Week Edmonton group and is the only one not involving engines.

The event will be using Victoria Hill (116th Street and 100th Avenue) and run from 9 AM to 4 PM or so.

We figure we need about another 35 volunteers to make this an event to be really proud of. Positions needed include traffic marshalls, setup/takedown, starter, finish line crew, and registration. All volunteers will get fed with a Fat Franks smokey and drink and receive a Soapbox Derby t-shirt. If you are free this Sunday and want to see some gravity led speed, contact Melanie at melgoudreau@hotmail.com and she will get you set up.

We have over 60 kids registered for the derby and will be the continuation of derbys that were held from 1946 onwards.

....
no engines in the airplane pull...

no engines in any of the music festival events either ( http://raceweekfestival.com/ ) which is expanding to include a number of charity fundraising events as well as the rice howard way street party (which is also expanding to include a pancake breakfast on thursday morning as well as a real roller derby contest on saturday afternoon)...

CTV Edmonton reported that the Edmonton Indy will be taken over by the company that runs the F1 in Montreal (Octane Racing Group Incorporated) for 5 years. The announcement will be made during the Indy according to the story, let's hope this is correct as a) it let's the City off the hook for any losses and b) a real race promoter would bring the event to a much higher level and c) give the event some much needed stability.

That would be excellent news. They make a massive party of the F1 in Montreal, whereas the Edmonton Indy is celebrated in the typical Deadmonton way (give or take a Bank Ultralounge beer tent or two).

^not this yr.

But yes, we need a promoter who developers the accessory events much better. It is a shame how little it feels like a race is on in this city.

Edmonton Indy on Octane?
By TERRY JONES, EDMONTON SUN
Last Updated: July 7, 2010

Until now the city of Edmonton was looking for a promoter of an auto race that didn’t have a place to race.

But while everybody seems willing to wait until the circus is in town — and city council takes the actual vote at a session on the Wednesday of race week — it appears that enough has happened to believe that the dithering and dathering group at City Hall has finally decided to keep the event as a big part of the Edmonton experience.

New promoter on deck for money-guzzling Indy?
By CLARA HO, CITY HALL BUREAU

The city may have found a promoter to take over the money-losing Indy event from Northlands, which is facing an uncertain future after this year.

Lorna Rosen, chief financial officer, confirmed the city is in talks with the Montreal-based Octane Racing Group — the promoter of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix — but no deal has been struck at this time.

“We only got the proposal (on Monday) so we will be doing an evaluation with respect to what’s in the proposal and then taking it forward to council for discussion in private (on July 21),” said Rosen, adding it was the only proposal the city received.

“In terms of what we’re looking at ... we’re still talking about an Indy race at the (city centre) airport.”

She said it was “premature” to comment on the idea of building a permanent track.

Administration will be asking the city for a three-year commitment — from 2011 to 2013 — a commitment the Indy Racing League would want to see, she said.

^Good to hear. I hope the proposal works out and the new group proves that this can be a successful race.

regardless of what happens next year, you can have a good time at the party this year starting this weekend:

"Relax, have some fun, hang out with some friends, and enjoy an awesome old-school R&B Show & Revue - courtesy Canada's top R&B ambassadors Mocking Shadows. Performing July 16 at the kickoff party, then every night for 8 nights starting Sunday, July 18, at the Sutton Place Hotel.

Check the calendar for details. Book a VIP table for up to ten people for $100.

attn: West-Coast blues fans - Don't miss Canadian blues legend, Juno Award Winner Brent Parkin on Race Weekend, July 23-24, for the "Cars & Guitars" early shows (7-10) in the Sutton Place Ballroom.

Make sure to check out Greg Demchuk & the Du-Rite Aces and Dave Babcock & the Nightkeepers for some jumpin' blues and classic rock & roll at the Rose & Crown Pub.

Sure to be the hottest ticket in town during Race Week. Don't be surprised to see Indy people, media, and VIP's around on the final weekend (Sutton Place is the host hotel). We'll show them we know how to have a good time, here in Edmonton.

Save yourself the hassle of hoping to get in, or hoping to get good seats together with your friends on hot ticket nights. Reserve a table for up to ten people for $100."

http://raceweekfestival.com/Home/Home.html

this is a completely volunteer driven community non-profit event with a number of benefitting charities if there's anything left over. the talent line-up is great and it's cheap... buy a ticket for $10 or get your boss to buy a table (or two) at $100 and take some friends.

EDMONTON — City officials have talked to Octane Racing about its proposal to run the Edmonton Indy, but no deal has been reached yet acting chief financial officer Lorna Rosen said Wednesday.

Any contract with the Montreal-based company will have to be approved by city council, which will discuss the issue during a private meeting next Wednesday, she said.

City near three-year Indy deal
Would be a sponsor but not responsible for losses, Mandel says

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, July 22, 2010

The city will sit down with Octane Racing Group to negotiate a deal to keep the Indy car race in Edmonton for at least the next three years.

Councillors voted 7-5 Wednesday in favour of working on a sponsorship arrangement with the Montreal company, which would continue to hold the race at the City Centre Airport, Mayor Stephen Mandel said...

Octane will have better access to federal funds, mayor says

Dan Barnes
Edmonton Journal

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Yes, the Edmonton Indy has received its required Octane boost.

City council wisely pulled over and will let Octane Management of Montreal drive revenues and fund expenses for the Indy Racing League event held at City Centre Airport...

I ended up picking up a pass for sunday for the gf and myself. After having a three day pass every previos year I wasn't going to go this year.

I'd still really like to go saturday for the Nascar race. It's always been the most enjoyable race of the weekend.
