Nightlife Discussion

Hey all, I was looking for a thread to post info about a new nightclub opening up and figured it might be appropriate to have a thread dedicated specifically to 'nightlife' discussion.

People can post about upcoming events/DJs/live acts coming to bars around town, new drinking holes opening/closing, your experiences/reviews of certain places, photos, or even the usual discussion about how to improve nightlife here. Now, I'm aware nightlife can be a bit of an ambiguous term, so for the purposes of this thread, I'm thinking we should focus specifically on clubs/bars/pubs/lounges/beer-gardens(?) as opposed to say opera, symphony, theatre, large-scale concerts, family or youth-oriented night activities. So what do you all think? A useful thread to have? Does the concept perhaps require some tweaking?

Anyways, if you're all happy with the idea it might be worthwhile for me to sticky it as well. Nightlife is a topic that tends to generate a lot of discussion so why not have one thread to focus it all in.

Anyways, my original goal was to post this link to a new nightclub opening up in Chinatown, apparently this month. I liked the website so I thought why not. It's called the Fortune Sound Club (a most appropriate name for Chinatown). I have no idea what it will be like but I'm interested in checking it out once it opens:
http://www.fortunesoundclub.com/

I first came across info on it via the "Olympic City Guide" on Ralph Lauren's website of all places:
http://www.ralphlauren.com/shop/inde...NER_EXPLORENOW

The guide was really focussed on new places opening in Chinatown which I found to be an interesting angle. The guide is short but much more unique and informed than similar guides I've seen before.

I think this thread is a good idea Raggedy. People in general here like to bitch and moan about the state of this city's nightlife but this thread could emphasize the positive things that are happening.

I'm interested in seeing how that club replacing the old Richards on Richards will turn out.

That is definitely one of my hopes in starting this thread.

After looking into things a bit more, I see that Fortune Sound Club is already open. Here are some pics from "The Cobbles" blog (post by 'Adam Mark'):

Thanks for posting all those great photos, Delirium. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm interested in seeing. I've heard about and seen the outside of 3 of the clubs you've brought up (all but Ginger 62) but never had a clue what they were like inside. Though I'm really not much of a clubber (more of a bar/pub person) I love the look of all those places and am actually pretty tempted to check them out. They're way more interesting looking than the big generic places on Granville (which I usually end up going to every once-in-a-while for other people's birthdays).

New place applying to join the Granville strip.

Quote:
Site History
On October 16, 2008 the applicant received Council approval for a new 200 seat, Liquor Primary liquor licence at 1046 Granville Street. The applicant has come to realize that the construction cost to proceed with a liquor primary liquor licence at 1046 Granville Street would be too costly given the poor conditions of the building structure and the need for very significant upgrades as determined by their structural engineer. The applicant has decided to file this new application for this site at 1163 Granville Street which is one block away.

The proposed site at 1163 Granville Street is in the building known as the St. Helen’s Hotel which also contained a liquor primary liquor licence. The liquor primary establishment ceased operating in 2007. There has been a liquor primary liquor licence associated with this location since the hotel started operation (prior to 1986 with a capacity of 240 persons). The liquor primary liquor licence (#005344) for this site was terminated by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch in 2007 and no longer exists.

This is a four storey plus basement “SRA designated and Heritage C” mixed-use building. The building at 1163 Granville Street was purchased by the Provincial Rental Housing Corporation in April 2007. This “Single Room Occupancy Hotel” (St. Helen’s Hotel) occupies the 2nd, 3rd and 4th
floors of this building. There are 93 sleeping units in this building.

This applicant currently operates several other licensed establishments in the city; Au Bar (674 Seymour Street), Tonic (919 Granville Street), Ocean Club in West Vancouver and three 1163 Granville Street – Hyde Entertainment Ltd
Liquor Primary Liquor Licence Application (Liquor Establishment Class 3) , 3
liquor primary establishments in Whistler. The applicant is also a member of BarWatch and participates in civic and community matters.

^ I have to say, Gorgomish is one the nicest afterhours club i've ever been to. They also have a Phazon sound system
which is regarded as the best sound system in the world (it costs about $48K). it really is the most amazing sound i have ever heard in a club.

All of those look nicer than what I've seen in Calgary.... You can put hay on the floor of a tent and convince people it's the place to be, so long as you call it Western themed. Never been to any of these places, but they look pretty cool.
